Late Run and Fourth Quarter Defense Lead Women's Basketball to Victory over Salem State

Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State University women's basketball team held the Vikings scoreless for almost the final five minutes of the game as the Rams erased a deficit and went on to secure a 72-65 victory over Salem State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Logan Gymnasium.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • The Rams were paced by 23 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals from Katherine Haselton. Haselton connected on 7-of-12 from the field including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. 

  • Faith Greene finished the game with a double-double of 18 points and a team-high 18 rebounds including seven on the offensive glass. 

  • Jacqueline Schels finished the night with 13 points, six rebounds and an assist, while Kiara Cerruti came off the bench to score eight points with six boards. 

  • Tied at 6-6, the Rams rattled off a 7-0 run capped by a three from Haselton to open a 13-6 lead with just under five on the clock. Salem countered with a 12-4 run of their own to lead 18-17 after one quarter. 

  • In the second quarter, Salem pushed the lead to five on a pair of occasions before the Rams used layups from Chloe Rayko and Michelle Moreno tying the game at 30-30 with just under four to play. The two teams traded buckets before the Vikings scored the final five of the frame to lead 40-35 at the half. 

  • The Rams tied the game 42-42 after back-to-back three from Rayko and Haselton with seven minutes on the clock. The Vikings used a 7-2 spurt to take a 49-44 lead with 4:27 on the clock. The Rams closed the third with a 13-1 run featuring a Kiara Cerruti drive in traffic and a breakaway layup from Schels to lead 57-50 after three. 

  • The Vikings opened the fourth outscoring the Rams 13-4 over the first five minutes retaking the lead 63-61. The Rams held the Vikings scoreless for the remainder of the game until the Vikings scored a layup with 8.1 seconds left. During that stretch the Rams jumped out to a 68-63 lead after a Greene jumper. The Rams sank their free throws in the final minute to ensure the victory.
