Women's Basketball Uses Second Quarter Run to Defeat Westfield State 86-80

Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State University women's basketball team used a 12-4 second quarter run taking the lead for good as the Rams defeated Westfield State 86-80 this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Logan Gymnasium.

The Rams saw a trio of players record double-doubles in the game led by 22 points and 16 rebounds from Faith Greene. Greene connected on 8-of-14 from the field and added 16 rebounds, an assist and two steals with a block.

Jacqueline Schels tallied 21 points on 6-of-12 from the field and added 11 rebounds, five assists and a steal, while Katherine Haselton finished the day with 14 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

Kiara Cerruti came off the bench for the Rams and tallied 16 points with four rebounds and two assists.

Westfield State led 5-3 two minutes into the game, but the Rams rattled off a 15-3 run featuring a Schels three and a steal and three-point play from Martin giving the Rams an 18-8 lead midway through the first. The Owls closed the first with a 9-2 spurt giving the Rams a 20-17 lead after one.

The two teams traded points to start the second quarter before the Rams used a 12-4 run capped by a Schels three to lead 35-25 with just over two to play. Westfield closed the gap to five on a Sophia DeAngelis layup, but a Kiara Cerruti jumper to close the quarter gave the Rams a 37-30 lead at the half.

The Rams extended the lead to 50-39 midway through the third quarter on a Martin layup, but the Owls used an 11-2 run pulling within two 52-50 with just over two to play in the quarter. The Rams responded with a 7-0 spurt featuring five points from Cerruti pushing the lead to 59-50. The Rams took a 60-54 lead into the fourth quarter.

Westfield chipped away at the Rams lead and tied the game 66-66 on a Maddie Pond three with 3:51 on the clock. The Rams answered with a three from Greene retaking the lead for good. The Rams pushed the lead to as many as 11 down the stretch before securing the 86-80 victory.
