Women's Basketball Completes Perfect MASCAC Slate with 81-53 Victory over Fitchburg State

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's basketball team finished the season a perfect 12-0 in league play for the first time in program history as the Rams defeated Fitchburg State 81-53 this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action.

THE BASICS:

- Score: Framingham State 81, Fitchburg State 53

- Records: Framingham State (20-5, 12-0 MASCAC), Fitchburg State (6-19, 3-9 MASCAC)

Location:  Parkinson Gymnasium – Fitchburg, Mass.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Rams saw four players record double figures in the contest led by a double double of 18 points and 10 rebounds from freshman Flannery O'Connor (Amesbury, Mass.).
  • Senior Mary Kate O'Day (Berlin, Mass.) chipped in with a double double of her own as she scored 17 and grabbed 11 boards including four on the offensive glass.
  • Senior Emily Velozo chipped in with 12 points on 4-of-8 from behind the arc, while freshman Sarah Sullivan (Sheffield, Mass.) added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
  • Junior Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.) tallied nine points on 3-of-5 from behind the arc, while Krysta Padellaro finished with seven points.
  • The Falcons were led by 15 point and four rebounds from Emma Thomson, while Angelina Marazzi added 13 points and five boards.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Trailing 5-0 to start the game, Mishelle Logie reeled off a jumper and a buried a three ball to cut the Falcons deficit to 8-5. Marazzi sandwiched a bucket in-between a pair of hoops from O'Connor (Amesbury, Mass.) to keep it to 12-7. The Rams would close out the frame with a 12-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Velozo to lead 24-7 after one frame.
  • Catherine Coppinger opened the second quarter with a jumper in the paint, followed by a beyond-the-arc basket from Thomson to cut the score to 28-12. The Rams extended their lead (40-14) with a three-point play from O'Day. Fitchburg State University closed out the second with a 7-1 run including baskets from Coppinger, Thomson and a pair from the charity stipe from Logie to head into halftime trailing 44-21.
  • The Rams opened the third quarter with four points from O'Connor to push the score to 51-21. The Falcons countered with a trey from Thomson and a layup from Coppinger. A three-point play from Padellaro extended the Rams advantage (56-26). The Green and Gold finished with a jumper from Marazzi and a three-pointer from Payton Holmes.
  • The Falcons chipped at the lead in the fourth as Marazzi drained five straight (79-44), but Framingham State answered back with a jumper from junior Sophia Church (Rochester, Mass.) before securing the decisive victory.

The Rams receive a first round bye in next week's MASCAC Tournament and will host the winner of the #4 Bridgewater State/#5 Salem State quarterfinal in one semifinal on Thursday, February 27th at 6 p.m.
