Softball Earns Split with Johnson & Wales

Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State University softball team faced off in a doubleheader with Johnson & Wales this afternoon losing the first game 10-8, before winning 12-9 in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

Game 1: Framingham State 8 - Johnson & Wales 10

  • The Wildcats jumped on top with a four runs in the top of the third inning. Jill Pulek led off the frame with a base hit sending Mackenzie Clee in for the run. Pulek scored on a two run homer off the bat of Kaelani Gamble. Talia Smaller would later score on an RBI single for the 4-0 advantage.
  • The Rams added two runs in the bottom of the fourth. After the first out, Mercedes Jimenez delivered a two run homer that scored Gwen Carpenter.
  • The Rams followed with a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Camille Desrochers was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Jimenez delivered an RBI single plating Desrochers for the 4-3 score.
  • The Wildcats scored six times in the top of the sixth, while the Rams plated five in the bottom of the inning to reach the final score of 10-8. Brooke Grassia delivered an RBI single and Gwendolyn Carpenter that was as close as the Rams would get.

Game 2: Framingham State 12, Johnson & Wales 9

  • A three run first inning put the Wildcats in the lead early. Hailey Erickson singled to center plating a pair and Meaghan Gurska followed with an RBI sacrifice hit.
  • The Rams responded with five in the bottom of the second, moving the score 8-5 after Johnson & Wales added another five in the top of the inning. Ally Gruca plated Shelby Roode on an RBI double followed by a Kelsey McGuill single that scored Gruca. With two outs against the Rams, Grassia drove in a pair on a single down the line and Carpenter plated the last run of the inning with a single up the middle.
  • Two in the bottom of the third pushed the score 8-7. Gruca delivered the big hit in the inning, a two run homer to left.
  • The Rams added two in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI triple to right center off the bat of Carpenter that scored Desrochers who was walked earlier in the inning, Carpenter scored the second run off an RBI single from Roode.
  • The Wildcats plated a single run in the top of the sixth to tie the score 9-9.
  • Three in the bottom of the frame pushed the Rams lead to 12-9. Gruca ripped a double down the line for the three run hit and the final margin of the game.

The Rams are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Worcester State for a pair of games beginning at 12 p.m.
