Softball Drops a Pair to Westfield State

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State softball team dropped both ends of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader to Westfield State University this afternoon at Maple Street Field.  The Owls came from behind for a 6-3 victory in the opener, before edging the Rams 2-1 in the nightcap.

With the wins, the Owls improve to 10-15 on the year and 3-3 in the MASCAC, while the Rams slide to 9-19 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

The Rams took the lead in the bottom of the first of the opener. Junior Marissa Flynn (Marlborough, Mass.) singles and classmate Tiffanie Marsh (Tewksbury, Mass.) followed with a double.  Freshman Lauren Salisbury (Cranston, RI) plated Flynn with a basehit.

Framingham extended the lead in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Bridget McGrail (Worcester, Mass.) that scored Anna Dziok (Southampton, Mass.) who had reached on an error.  The Rams tacked on a third run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Marsh.

The Owls got on the board in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by sophomore Angelica Banning (E. Granby, Conn.).  They tied the game in their next at bat on an RBI double from junior Liz Kelly (Quincy, Mass.) and an RBI single by Emma Dunbar (Weymouth, Mass.).

The Owls took the lead for good in the top of the seventh on Kelly's RBI single and Dunbar followed with an insurance run on a sacrifice fly.

Sarah Eugenio earned the win in the opener going the distance allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Senior Natasha Arseneau (Waltham, Mass.) took the loss surrendering six runs, four earned, on 10 hits.

The Rams got on the board first once again in game two as they capitalized on a pair of Owls errors to score an unearned run in the second.  The Owls were able to once again come from behind scoring two runs in the fourth to secure the sweep.

Julia Sullivan earned the victory in game two going seven innings and allowing one unearned run on six hits with four strikeouts. Marsh took the loss in her first start of the season. March went seven allowing two earned runs on eight hits with no walks and a strikeout.

The Rams resumes MASCAC action on Monday afternoon at Worcester State for a pair of games slated to begin at 12 p.m., while the Owls host Salem State on Monday for a MASCAC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
