Softball Walks Off with 5-4 Win In Game Two Split with Fitchburg State

Framingham, Mass. – Freshman Lauren Salisbury singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as the Framingham State softball team walked off with a 5-4 victory in game two over Fitchburg State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Maple Street Field.  The Falcons won the opener 8-0 in five innings. 

With the split, both teams are now 1-1 in the conference while the Rams move to 6-12 overall and the Falcons even their record at 8-8.

The Falcons took the opener 8-0 in five innings.  Sophomore Emily Comtois (Windham, NH) started the scoring in the top of the first with a two run blast to left.  The Falcons added five more in the top of the second including a two run homer from freshman Maddie Medina (Pelham, NH) to extend the lead to 7-0 after two.  The Falcons added one more in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly to reach the final margin.

Galen Kerr (Concord, Mass.) earned the win for the Falcons going five innings and scattering four hits while striking out three with no walks. Freshman Kelsi Gunarathne (North Providence, RI) took the loss going an inning and allowing six earned runs on seven hits with a walks and a strikeout.

In game two, the Rams took the lead in the bottom of the first on a double by sophomore Anna Dziok (Southampton, Mass.) that plated junior Tiffanie Marsh (Tewksbury, Mass.) who had also doubled in the inning. 

In the top of the second, the Falcons claimed a 3-1 lead on an RBI single by Kaylee Sylvestre (Central Falls, RI) and a two run double by Marissa Gemma (Leominster, Mass.) with the bases loaded.

Fitchburg tacked on one more run in the top of the fourth on a groundout by Sylvestre to push the lead to 4-1. The Rams got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Jessica Pietersen (Norton, Mass.) and single from junior Kylie Boyle (Billerica, Mass.).

Pietersen earned the victory in the circle for the Rams going seven innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits with a strikeout.

The Rams rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off the with the victory.  Sophomore Megan Downing (Hanson, Mass.) laced a single to center that plated the tying run and after an out Salisbury drilled a single to center to score the game deciding run.

The Rams are back in action Tuesday afternoon when they host Brandeis at 3 p.m., while the Falcons host Becker on Tuesday also at 3 p.m.
