Men’s Soccer Blanks Worcester State; Cardeiro Receives Heffernan Award

Framingham, Mass.- The Framingham State University men's soccer team defeated visiting Worcester State 3-0 in MASCAC action Saturday afternoon at Maple St. Field. With the victory the Rams move to 3-5 and 2-0 in the league and the Lancers fall to 1-5-1 and 0-2 in conference play.

Senior Cory Cardeiro (Fall River, Mass.) received the 2015 Peter J. Heffernan Jr. Award given annually to a member of the men's soccer team for outstanding performance in a game.  Heffernan is a former FSU men's soccer player and alum who tragically passed away in 2005. The 2015 award was the 10th annual and final time the award will be presented.

The Rams opened up scoring in the 29th minute when sophomore Andy Segura (Haverhill, Mass.) gathered a throw in from Cardeiro and sent a low strike past the Lancers keeper for the early lead.

The Rams added to their advantage when Cardeiro dove into a low cross from Simon Appiah (Worcester, Mass.) and headed into an open net as the Rams took a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Rams added an insurance goal with just over 6 minutes to go when sophomore Gerardo Ramirez (Burlington, Mass.) sent a one-time pass from freshman Lucas Medeiros (Hudson, Mass.) into an open net to reach the final margin. 

Rams keeper junior Josh Arno (Natick, Mass.) made two saves in the shutout victory and his counterpart senior Tim Schmidt (Southwick, Mass.) made nine saves for the Lancers.

The hosts outshot the Lancers 20-to-9 in the contests while WSU was called for 16 fouls to the Rams 11.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday, September 29th when they host Anna Maria at 4:00 p.m. The Lancers host Becker at the same day and time.
