Men’s Soccer Suffers 4-1 Setback at Rhode Island College

Providence, R.I.-Rhode Island College sophomore forward Komla Dogbey (Providence, RI) scored twice to help the Anchormen defeat Framingham State, 4-1, and stem a modest two-game losing streak in collegiate men's soccer action played at the RIC Soccer Field on Tuesday evening.

The Anchormen (3-4) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when senior midfielder Jose Zarraga (Providence, RI) corralled a loose ball at midfield and fed a sprinting Dogbey. He outran two Framingham (2-5) defenders, avoided Ram junior goalkeeper Josh Arno (Natick, MA) who had come out to challenge, and tapped the ball into the open net for his seventh of the year.

Framingham State evened the score with five minutes left in the first half when senior back Tyler Jack (Chicopee, MA) settled a free ball in the box and ripped a shot that was stopped on a diving save by RIC junior goalkeeper Chris Moura (Rumford, RI).  Sophomore forward Andy Segura (Haverhill, MA) pounced on the loose ball and chipped it past Moura for his first of the season.

RIC held a 12-6 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes and led in corner kicks, 3-0.

The Anchormen capitalized on a failed clear in the 54th minute to take a 2-1 lead. Arno cleared the ball to midfield, where Zarraga won a challenge and headed a ball forward to a streaking Dogbey. He broke in alone on Arno, made a move around him and scored on the open net for his second of the night and eighth of the year.

RIC got an important insurance goal in the 66th minute when sophomore midfielder Ty Catunto (New Bedford, MA) was fouled on the right sideline about 10 yards from the end line. Freshman midfielder Dennis Vazquez (Providence, RI) took the free kick that was knocked home by junior defender Yemi Mathew (Providence, RI) for his first career marker.

Junior forward Nicholas Wolny (Woonsocket, RI) capped the offense on the night in the 83rd minute with Zarraga and junior defender Tyler Kenyon (Exeter, RI) earning the assists.

Moura finished with four saves to pick up his third win (3-3), while Arno turned away eight in a losing effort (2-5). RIC held the advantage in shots, 26-8, and corner kicks, 7-2.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference action at home against UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, Sept. 26 (noon). The Rams will host Worcester State in MASCAC action on the same day and time.
