Men’s Soccer Rallies for Overtime Victory over Rhode Island College

Framingham, Mass. – Senior back Will Menter (Haverhill, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals to propel the Framingham State University men's soccer team to a 2-1 come from behind victory over Rhode Island College in non-conference action this afternoon at Maple Street Field.

With the win, the Rams improve to 2-4-2 on the year, while the Anchormen slip to 2-5-1.

Rhode Island College struck first late in the first half breaking the scoreless tie.  In the 39th minute sophomore Brian Sujecki (Pawcatuck, Conn.) took a direct kick from the right sideline and floated the ball into the top corner past the Rams goalkeeper for his first of the season.

The Anchormen had an opportunity to extend their lead two minutes later when freshman midfielder Camilo Estrada (Pawtucket, RI) dribbled through the Rams defense and had a shot from in front of the net, but his bid rolled just outside the post.

The Rams had several chances to tie the game early in the second half, but it would take until the 83rd minute for them to score the equalizer.  Sophomore Bryan DaSilva (Milford, Mass.) sent the Rams eighth corner of the game into the box and Menter who was on the far post knocked it home for his second of the season.

Rhode Island College had a chance to go ahead two minutes later on blast from senior Carlos Medina (Pawtucket, RI) just inside the box, but Framingham State goalkeeper Kiko Anzoateguí (Peabody, Mass.) made the diving save.

The Rams had two chances in the closing minute to win the game but could not find the back of the net.  With 40 seconds remaining, sophomore Nick Cotter (Sandwich, Mass.) had possession on the right sideline and sent a shot at the net that went just wide and with 23 seconds remaining senior back Luis Gomes (Milford, Mass.) sent a direct kick into the box that the RIC goalkeeper knocked away.

RIC had a chance right off the bat in overtime when sophomore Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI) carried the ball into the box and fired a shot on net that Anzoateguí made a diving save on.

The Rams answered right back with an offensive surge of their own to pick up the victory.  The Rams had a throw in deep in the Anchormen's end to set up the game-winner.  Sophomore Cory Cardiero (Westport, Mass.) sent a long throw into the box that Cotter deflected and Menter blasted into the top corner at 92:29.

The Rams held a 16-11 advantage for shots in the game in addition to holding an 11-1 edge in corner kicks.

Anzoateguí made five saves for the Rams and recorded his first victory in net this season, while sophomore Christopher Duarte (Cumberland, RI) made five saves for the Anchormen.

The Rams return to action on Saturday afternoon with a conference game at MCLA at 1 p.m., while the Anchormen travel to UMass Dartmouth for an LEC tilt on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
