Men's Soccer Shutout at MIT, 4-0
Cambridge, Mass. – Two goals by MIT in the first 10 minutes of action propelled the Engineers to a 4-0 win over Framingham State University in a non-conference men's soccer tilt on Wednesday afternoon. Senior Zach Kabelac (Potomac, Md.) and freshmen Nick Diamantoni (Belle Mead, N.J.) and John Kramer (Glastonbury, Conn.) each recorded one goal and an assist for the Engineers.
MIT got on the board after 8:41 expired in the opening frame. A pass from Diamantoni along the near side was gathered by Kabelac and caused goalie Billy Levitsky (Westford, Mass.) to come off his line. He guarded the near post but Kabelac was able to place a low shot into the far corner. The Rams nearly recorded the equalizer on their next possession courtesy of a line drive by sophomore Ronaldo Vieira (Framingham, Mass.), however, senior goalie Dylan Rankin (Providence, R.I.) made the diving grab.
On the Engineers' ensuing trip downfield, sophomore Jonathan Tebes (Hamden, Conn.) led a breakaway along the far sideline. He sent the ball to Kramer in the box, drawing out Levitsky, who then tapped it to Diamantoni for the open net goal. Kabelac and freshman Alexander Dago (Chicago, Ill.) had chances to increase the hosts' margin, but Levitsky came up with a pair of athletic saves to keep Framingham State within striking distance.
A free kick helped push MIT's advantage to 3-0 in the 54th minute. From 40 yards out, Kabelac struck a rolling shot that was initially stopped by Sam Yoder (Uxbridge, Mass.), however Kramer knocked in the rebound for the goal. In the 66th minute sophomore Matthew Monheit (Abington, Pa.) launched a dangerous shot from just inside midfield that was punched out by Yoder.
The Rams' best chance at ending the shutout occurred in the 72nd minute. Bryan DaSilva (Milford, Mass.) placed a corner kick into the box which resulted in a scramble in front of the net. After the ball was batted around it made its way to Kabelac on the near sideline. He initiated a breakaway and set up freshman Chester Chambers (Columbia, Md.) for his first intercollegiate marker.
Rankin collected seven saves in 81 minutes while freshman Samuel Cannon (Scarsdale, N.Y.) closed out the game. Levitsky grabbed two saves in the first half as Yoder made four stops in the second.
MIT (3-0-0) will return to action on Monday, Sept. 12 when it travels to Emerson College while Framingham State (0-1-1) will visit WPI on Saturday, Sept. 10.
