Ice Hockey Battles to 2-2 Tie with Westfield State on Senior Day

Framingham Mass. The Framingham State men's ice hockey team played to a 2-2 draw with Westfield State in MASCAC action Saturday afternoon at Loring Arena.

Prior to the contest the Rams honored the five Framingham State seniors playing in their final season: Ethan Cervonayco (Chicopee, Mass.), Luca Olivo (Marlton, NJ), Jake Conrad (Romeoville, IL), Blake Carlson (Clermont, FL) & Matt Irwin (Billerica, Mass.).

THE BASICS:

- Score:  Framingham State 2, Westfield State 2

- Records: Framingham State (5-16-2, 3-12-2 MASCAC), Westfield State (9-12-2, 5-10-1 MASCAC)

- Location: Loring Arena Framingham, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a scoreless first period the visiting Owls scored just under three minutes into the second when Mathieu Jones finished off a setup from Brett Williams for the 1-0 lead.

  • The Owls doubled their lead midway through the second when Cullen Young scored off a pass from Colin Roe.

  • The Rams cut the deficit in half about 13 minutes in when Elijah Slagter found the back of the cage after a setup from Sam Larkin.

  • The Rams appeared to tie the score near the end of the second but the goal was waved off for incidental contact with the goalie. Just about thirty seconds later Matt Irwin tucked one inside the right post to tie the score at two.

  • Rams goalie Trevor Stenberg made a diving save on a second chance attempt in the final seconds of the second period to send the teams to the second intermission tied at two.

  • After a scoreless third period the teams went into extra time. The Owls were called for a penalty early in the frame but the Rams couldn't capitalize on the man advantage. The Rams then committed a penalty with just under two minutes to play in the overtime period but kept the Owls off the board to reach the final margin.

  • Valtteri Valtonen made 39 saves in the contest for the Owls. Stenberg made 39 stops in the tie for the Rams.

  • Neither team was successful on special teams as the Owls were 0-for-3 and the Rams were 0-for-7
