Men’s Ice Hockey Salvages 2-2 Tie with Plymouth State

Framingham, Mass.- The Framingham State men's ice hockey team salvaged a 2-2 overtime tie with MASCAC leading Plymouth State at Loring Arena Thursday evening. With the tie the Rams move to 3-11-1 (2-6-1 MASCAC) with the Panthers move to 12-3-1 (7-1-1 MASCAC).

The two teams skated to an even first period where neither team scored or committed a penalty. The Rams took advantage of the game's first penalty early in the second period when Mark Essery (Rockfall, CT) put FSU up 1-0 with assist from Derek Ridgeway (Franklin, Mass.) and Rich Hill (Tampa, FL).

The Panthers answered in the opening minutes of the third frame when they scored on the power-play with the goal going to Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, NJ) with Erik Strom (Gothenburg, Sweden) assisting.

A little over halfway through the 3rd FSU freshman Jake McKinnon (Framingham, Mass.) sniped a long strike over the goalies shoulder for another Rams power-play goal. Cam Coburn (Fresno, CA) and Keith Barnaby (Leominster, Mass.) were credited with assists.

The visitors tied the score with just over five minutes remaining in regulation when Josh Woody (Sunderland, MD) scored a power-play goal with an assist from Tommy Dowell (Olathe, Kansas).

Both teams had opportunities to score in the overtime period but neither side could convert.

Adam Calabrese (Philadelphia, PA) turned away 38 Panthers shots to preserve the tie for the Rams while Evan Morelli (Reading, Mass.) made 26 stops for PSU.

All four goals were scored on the power-play. The Rams were 2-for-5 on the man advantage while the Panthers converted 2-of-3 chances.

The Rams return to the ice on Saturday, January 23rd when they host Westfield State at 2:40 p.m. The Panthers host Fitchburg State on the same day at 6:00 p.m.
