Baseball Falls to Amherst and Elmhurst

Auburndale, Fla. - The Framingham State University baseball team was defeated 16-12 by Amherst College and 7-5 by Elmhurst this afternoon in non-conference action at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Complex. 

THE BASICS:

Amherst 16, Framingham 12 

  • Amherst grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Rams countered with four in the bottom of the frame. Jakob Lindkvist scored on a wild pitch and Roscoe Palmer singled to left  plating the first two runs.  Massimo Mondi reached on a fielder's choice scoring a run and Steven Burbank added an RBI double. 

  • Amherst regained the lead with single runs in the top of the third and top of the fifth. 

  • The Rams tallied six runs in the bottom of the fifth taking a 10-5 lead.  Johnny Lynch plated a run with an infield single and Scott Paquette adding an RBI base hit.  Palmer drove in a pair with a single to left and the Rams capitalized on two Amherst errors to score the final two of the inning. 

  • Amherst used a six-run top of the seventh to retake the lead 11-10. 

  • The Rams answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from JC Espinal and an RBI single from Dane Frellick to lead 12-11. 

  • Amherst took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the seventh and added two more in the top of the ninth to reach the final score. 

  • Palmer finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Lynch finished 3-for-5 with a double, two run scored and an RBI. 

  • Mondi also finished the game with two hits, two RBI and two stolen bases, while Frellick went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. 

  • Joshua Sunderland started on the mound and went 6.2 innings and did not factor in the decision allowing 11 runs, five earned, on 14 hits with three strikeouts. 

Elmhurst 7, Framingham 5 

  • The Rams got on the board first in the top of the first inning on an RBI single to right from Espinal. 

  • Elmhurst took the lead in the bottom of the third as they plated a pair of runs and they extended the lead with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth, taking advantage of a Ram error. 

  • The Rams pushed across an unearned run in the top of the seventh, but Elmhurst answered with a run in the bottom of the inning making the score 7-3. 

  • The Rams rallied for a run in the top o thfe eighth on a sacrifice fly from Christian Cox and added a single run in the ninth on an RBI single from Espinal to reach the final score. 

  • Jason Strickland started on the mound for the Rams and went five innings allowing three earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. 

  • Espinal finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Daniel Robichaud, Burbank and Basile each recorded a pair of hits.
