39 Rams Named to 2014 Spring MASCAC All-Academic Team

Westfield, Mass. - A total of 660 student-athletes, including 39 from Framingham State University, have been honored by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference with selection to the league’s Spring 2014 All-Academic Team as announced earlier today by MASCAC Commissioner Angela Baumann.

Women’s lacrosse leads the way with 12 honorees, while ice hockey and softball followed with eight and six honorees, respectively.  The men’s and women’s basketball squads each landed five on the 2014 Spring All-Academic Team, while baseball placed three.

Members of the women’s lacrosse team who earned all-academic recognition include seniors Marissa Canfield (Business Administration), Amanda Geary (Mathematics), Kaity Rossi (Spanish) and McKenzie Vershon (English), and freshmen Lindsay Albert (Elementary Education), Brianna Alimonti (Biology), Katelyn Belcher (Business Administration), Kaitlyn Gordon (English), Kristen Hoggins (Elementary Education), Kayla Hopkins (Communication Arts), Devan Peterson (Early Childhood Education), and Amy Rotger (Elementary Education).

Honorees from the ice hockey team include seniors Herbert Kyles (Business Administration) and Roy Monson (Business Administration), junior Jay Nicholls (Business Administration), sophomores John Buckley (Computer Science), Rich Hill (Biology), and Melvin Nichols (Business Administration) and freshmen Vaughn Guetens (Business Administration) and Alessio Muggli (Business Administration).

Seniors Alyssa Begin (Psychology) and Andrea Smith (Mathematics), junior Shelby Phillips (Political Science) and sophomores Helen Falzone (English), Kourtney Kacian (Biology) and Emily Kattau (Psychology) were honored with selection from the softball team.

Members of the men’s basketball squad included on the All-Academic team are sophomores Joe McCabe (Education) and Tim McCarthy (Undeclared), and freshmen Matt Diver (Business Administration), Dan Gould (History), and Patrick Gould (History).

Senior Kristen Hoffman (Business Administration), junior Samantha Irvine (Business Administration), and freshmen Carlee Putnam (Food & Nutrition), Alycia Rackliffe (Food & Nutrition) and Amy Rotger (Elementary Education) were recognized from the women’s basketball team.

Juniors Matt Gerard (Criminology) and John Gill (Business Administration) and sophomore Brendan McDonough (Undeclared) were the honorees from the baseball squad.

Student-athletes that compete in championship varsity sports offered by each of the MASCAC institutions during the course of the Spring 2014 athletic season and have achieved a 3.20 cumulative or semester-based grade point average during the semester are eligible for selection to the Spring All-Academic Team.

The Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, the nation’s oldest Division III men’s and women’s playing conference, has a rich and storied tradition of competitive success while celebrating excellence in the classroom.  MASCAC member schools include Bridgewater State University, Fitchburg State University, Framingham State University, MCLA, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State University, Westfield State University and Worcester State University.  Two other institutions, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Plymouth State University, are affiliate members of the conference in the sports of men’s ice hockey and football, while Western Connecticut State University joined the conference as an affiliate member in football beginning in 2013-14.
