Westfield State Captures MASCAC Volleyball Regular Season Title with 3-1 Victory over Volleyball

Framingham, Mass. – The Westfield State University volleyball team secured the 2013 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Regular Season Title with a 3-1 victory on the road this morning over the Framingham State University Rams at Framingham's Athletic Center.

The game was a match-up of MASCAC unbeaten teams for the regular season crown as both squads entered the game with a 5-0 mark in the conference.  With the win, the Owls (17-14, 6-0 MASCAC) are the 2013 MASCAC Volleyball Regular Season Champions and will be the top seed in next week's MASCAC Volleyball Championship Tournament.  The Owls will host the semifinals and finals next Saturday and will meet the winner of the 3/6 quarterfinal in one semifinal match.

The Rams (23-6, 5-1 MASCAC) see their 11-game MASCAC winning streak snapped by the Owls and will meet the winner of the 4/5 quarterfinal match in the other semifinal next Saturday.

The Owls took the first game 25-19, but the Rams answered easily taking the second 25-10.  Westfield State regrouped and took the final two sets 25-22 to secure the four set victory and knock off the defending MASCAC champion Rams.

Westfield State received 14 kills and 20 digs from senior Julia Warner (Lee, Mass.) and 10 kills and 19 digs from classmate Lindsay Rescott (Northport, NY).  Junior Carolyn Cote (Chelmsford, Mass.) chipped in with 37 set assists and four block assists, while senior Kayleigh Shea (Chelmsford, Mass.) added 16 digs.

Sophomore Danielle Girard (Tivoli, NY) led the Rams with 11 kills and 18 digs, while freshman Alycia Rackliffe (Feeding Hills, Mass.) added 10 and four blocks.  Senior Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, Mass.) chipped in with eight kills, while freshman Julia Wan (South Deerfield, Mass.) added seven and 17 digs.

The Rams closed the day with a pair of matches at Eastern Nazarene College. The Rams defeated both Eastern Nazarene and Gordon College 3-0 to improve their season record to 25-6. The 25 wins ties the school record for victories in a single season with the 1991 Rams.
