Volleyball Overcomes Slow Start to Defeat MCLA 3-1

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University volleyball team dropped the first set to the visiting Trailblazers but came storming back to take the next three as the Rams defeated MCLA 3-1 this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Framingham's Athletic Center.   

The Rams improve to 12-4 on the year and remain unbeaten in conference play at 3-0, while the Trailblazers fall to 7-8 overall and are in search of their first MASCAC victory at 0-2.

MCLA controlled the first set jumping out to an 8-4 lead on a kill from junior Darien Quick (Sparrowbush, NY) and extended the lead to 14-9 on a kill from senior Julia Christian (Cohoes, NY).  Framingham State chipped away at the lead and pulled within two as the teams traded points at 20-18. The Rams finally tied the score at 22-22 on a hitting error by the Trailblazers, but MCLA scored the next two points and eventually took the set 25-23 on a kill from senior Kendra Hobbs (Haverhill, Mass.).

The Rams came alive in the next two sets winning by scores of 25-5 and 25-7 before taking the fourth 25-15 to secure the victory.

Freshman Alycia Rackliffe (Feeding Hills, Mass.) led the Rams with a match-best 14 kills on 24 attempts with just two errors, while senior Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, Mass.) followed with 12 kills. Sophomore Danielle Girard (Tivoli, NY) registered 20 digs, while freshman Julia Wan (South Deerfield, Mass.) picked up 15.  Junior Maribeth Martin (Barnstable, Mass.) chipped in 24 assists, while classmate Morgan Drew (North Easton, Mass.) added 12.

The Rams return to action on Saturday afternoon with three matches at Eastern Connecticut's Crabtree Classic, while the Trailblazers host Norwich on October 8th at 7 p.m.
