Volleyball Drops a Pair of Matches Against MIT and Smith
Cambridge, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches this afternoon against a pair of NEWMAC opponents at a non-conference tri-match. The Rams were edged in five sets, 3-2, by Smith College and defeated 3-0 by MIT.
In the day's other match, the MIT women's volleyball team blanked NEWMAC rival Smith College 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-19). MIT defeated first-time opponent Framingham State University by scored of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-16), while Smith won by tallies of 22-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21, and 15-11.

Senior Tatiana Berger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) racked up 14 kills, a .394 hitting percentage, and three blocks for MIT (12-5, 3-1 NEWMAC). Seniors Emma Gargus (Columbus, Ohio) and Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, Mass.) both registered six kills and three blocks. Junior Jenny Astrachan (Austin, Texas) also chipped in six kills while senior Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.) notched five kills and two blocks. Senior Sharon Hao(San Jose, Calif.) and freshman Tori Wuthrich (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) collected six digs apiece as freshman Jennie Glerum (Redmond, Wash.) earned seven aces. Junior Nicole Gagnier (Atlanta, Ga.) rounded out the Engineers with 32 assists and four digs.
Senior Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H.) led Smith (9-5, 2-3 NEWMAC) with five kills as sophomore Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif.) totaled nine digs and three kills. Senior Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass.) finished with 11 assists and seven digs while junior Kristi Hammond (Yona, Guam) notched four digs and three kills.

In the back-and-forth battle, Drummond amassed 16 kills, eight digs, and four blocks as senior Paige Sarlandt (Cloverdale, Calif.) racked up 14 kills, a .464 hitting performance, and five blocks. Hammond had 12 kills, eight digs, and four blocks while Mei-Li Smith compiled 17 digs, nine kills, seven assists, and two aces. Freshman Julie Voorhees (Ramona, Calif.) collected 14 digs, followed by sophomore Chelsea Orefice (Springfield, Mass.) with nine. Ashworth recorded 36 assists and seven digs while freshman Lauren Shaffer (Downey, Calif.) added three blocks.
Freshman Alycia Rackliffe (Feeding Hills, Mass.) paced Framingham State University (11-4) with 15 kills to go along with two aces and two blocks. Freshman Julia Wan (South Deerfield, Mass.) generated 12 kills, a .312 hitting percentage, 11 digs, three aces, and two blocks as senior Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, Mass.) posted seven kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Danielle Girard (Tivoli, N.Y.) collected a team-high 16 digs in addition to seven kills and two aces while sophomore Annie DeLoid (Plymouth, Mass.) recorded three aces. Juniors Maribeth Martin (Barnstable, Mass.) and Morgan Drew (North Easton, Mass.) shared setting duties, dishing out 26 and 15 assists, respectively.

Berger paced MIT with 16 kills and added six digs and two blocks as Bunker produced 10 kills, a .562 hitting performance, and two blocks. Hunt tacked on eight kills while Astrachan had six kills and two aces. Glerum picked up three more aces as Hao chipped in two of her own. Wuthrich paced the Engineers with 11 digs while Gagnier registered 38 assists and two aces.
Rackliffe led Framingham State with eight kills as Girard tallied five kills, a match-high four aces, and four digs. Wan registered five kills and six digs while junior Courtney Wilbur (Braintree, Mass.) tacked on eight digs and two aces. Martin totaled 13 assists in addition to four digs and two aces as Drew closed the day with nine assists.
All three teams return to conference play next week. On Tuesday, Oct. 1, MIT will travel to Clark University while Smith will host Emerson College in a pair of NEWMAC tilts. Framingham State resumes MASCAC play on Wednesday, Oct. 2 as it will have a home match with MCLA at 7 p.m.
