Volleyball Splits with Westfield State and WPI

Westfield, Mass. – The Framingham State University volleyball team split a pair of matches this afternoon on the road picking up a key conference victory with a 3-0 win over Westfield State University before falling 3-1 to WPI at Westfield State.

WPI swept the tri-match defeating both Westfield State University and Framingham State University by 3-1 scores.

In the opening match, Framingham State swept Westfield State, 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-15) in a key Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) meeting. Framingham is now 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while Westfield falls to 1-11 overall and 0-1 in the MASCAC.

The Rams' front line of Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, Mass.) (14 kills), Danielle Girard (Tivoli, NY) (12 kills) and Ashley Nee (Hanson, Mass.) (10 kills) combined for 36 kills in the MASCAC matchup. Nee also had a match-high four blocks. Kassandra Jermyn (Auburn, Mass.) recorded 20 assists for the winners and Michelle DeJesus (Framingham, Mass.) had 15 digs.

Shannon Shea had five kills and four service aces for the Owls, while Kayleigh Shea contributed nine digs and Stana Wheeler totaled 13 assists. 

In the second match, Framingham State continued its fine play by taking the first set from WPI, 26-24. But WPI, now owning a 9-4 record, swept the next three sets, 25-20, 25-15, 25-15.

Alex Rangel racked up 36 assists for WPI and Lauren D'Angelo had 17 digs. Belinda Nwagbara and Kerrin Beovich both finished with nine kills.

In the third match, Westfield State was highly competitive in a 3-1 setback (25-17, 24-26, 25-22, 25-19) to WPI.

Rangel rolled up 38 assists for a two-match total of 74. D'Angelo had a match-high 16 digs and Beovich registered a match-high five blocks. Leading WPI up front were Nwagbara (12 kills) and Jenny Wallace (8 kills).

Shannon Shea totaled 11 kills, two aces, and three digs for the Owls. Julia Warner had six kills and Wheeler posted 23 assists.
