Volleyball Defeats Newbury and Falls to WNE

Brookline, Mass. – The Framingham State University volleyball team split two matches today with Western New England and Newbury College. The Rams defeated the Nighthawks 3-1 and lost to the Golden Bears 3-1.

Freshman middle blocker Sydney Fish (Kalamazoo, Mich.) opened the day tallying a set-high six kills in the first set against Framingham State to give Newbury the early 1-0 advantage. But the Rams were not going to be denied as they stormed their way back winning three frames in a row.

The second game set the tone for how the remainder of the day was going to shake out. All three sets were hard fought against the equally matched institutions. Framingham State sophomore outside hitter Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, Mass.) registered 13 kills while junior outside hitter Ann Staulo (Newton, Mass.) recorded a .429 attack percentage to lead the Rams to three straight set victories to claim the first match. Freshman Morgan Drew (North Easton, Mass.) recorded 31 assists, while classmate Kayla Bertrand (Agawam, Mass.) added 21 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Jessy Touron (Brockton, Mass.) notched a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs while Fish finished the match with 11 kills and a .346 attack percentage in the loss.

The Rams second match of the afternoon started the same way as the first one. Coming off the come-from-behind victory against Newbury, Framingham State kept rolling, jumping out to the one game lead taking set one in a tight battle, 25-21. Western New England hit their stride in the middle of the second game, holding off a late Ram comeback and rattled off three straight wins.

Sophomore outside hitter Maureen Pollet (Dix Hills, N.Y.) led three Golden Bears with double figure kills notching 13 kills. Freshman outside hitter Kasey Cameron (Reading, Mass.) followed with 11 while sophomore middle hitter Tyler Singh (Dumont, N.J.) chipped in 10.

Fernandes once again led the Rams attack as she registered another 12 kills against the Golden Bears to finish the day with 25 total and an impressive .396 attack percentage. Fernandes was helped out by Drew's 24 assists and Bertrand's 17 digs.

 The Rams return to action on Wednesday at Salem State at 7 p.m.
