Volleyball Holds Off Mount Ida for 3-2 Victory

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University volleyball team held off a comeback by the Mount Ida College Mustangs to pick up a 3-2 non-conference win tonight in their home opener.  The Rams even their record at 2-2 on the season, while the Mustangs are now 1-2.

The Rams won the first two sets 26-24 and 25-12 before dropping the next two 21-25 and 14-25.  In the decisive game, the Rams took the lead for good at 11-10 on a Mount Ida hitting error.  The Rams extended their lead to two on a kill, but a service error gave possession back to Mount Ida trailing by one.  Freshman Ashley Nee (Hanson, Mass.) picked up a block to put the Rams up 14-12, but the Mustangs would not go away quietly as senior Rachelle Gilbert (Corunna, IN) answered with a kill to pull Mount Ida back within one.  The Rams would take the game and the match on the next play as the Mustang serve sailed out of bound.

The Rams took the first set with solid play around the net and the second as they capitalized on four blocks in the set and a number of Mount Ida miscues.

In the third set, Mount Ida charged out to 20-6 lead before the Rams came storming back and pulled within two at 23-21 on a kill by Nee.  Mount Ida regrouped to score the final two points and take the set.  In the fourth, the Mustangs once again opened large leads of 17-9 and 21-10 and were able to close the set easily forcing the decisive game.

Nee led the Rams attack with a team-high 13 kills and three blocks.  Junior Jackie Friel (Centerville, Mass.) had a solid game at the net chipping in 10 kills and four blocks, while sophomore Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, Mass.) also recorded double digit kills with 11 to go along with nine digs.  Freshman libero Kayla Bertrand (Agawam, Mass.) picked up a team-high 25 digs and 13 receptions.

The Rams return to action on Friday in a rematch of tonight's game as they face Mount Ida at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational at 6 p.m., the Mustangs open play at the Invitational with a match against Eastern Nazarene at 4 p.m.
