Volleyball Goes 1-2 at Gordon Invitational

Wenham, Mass. – The Framingham State University volleyball team opened the 2011 season going 1-2 at the Gordon Invitational today.  The Rams lost their first match of the day 3-1 to Newbury College, defeated St. Joseph's (Conn.) in their second match 3-0 and closed the day with a 3-0 loss to Simmons College.

In their first match of the day, the Rams were led on the attack by freshman middle hitter Ashley Nee (Hanson, Mass.).  Nee collected a team-high 10 kills, 11 digs and three blocks, while classmate Mrgan Drew (North Easton, Mass.) chipped in 22 assists and eight digs.  The Rams lost the first two sets 25-20 and 25-23 before winning the third 25-20.  Newbury regrouped to take the match in the fourth set by a score of 26-24.

In the day's middle match the Rams won in three sets by scores of 28-26, 25-17, and 25-15.  They were led by freshman Courtney Wilbur (Braintree, Mass.) who picked up a career-high four aces, while fellow freshman Kayla Bertrand (Agawam, Mass.) added three and sophomore Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, Mass.) added two.  Junior Jackie Friel (Centerville, Mass.) chipped in a team-high five kills to go along with two blocks.

The Rams closed the day with a 3-0 loss to Simmons losing by scores of 25-19, 29-27, and 25-10.  Fernandes and Nee led the Rams with eight and seven kills respectively, while Drew chipped in 20 assists.  Friel picked up four blocks, while Bertrand added 12 digs.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday as they host Mount Ida at 7 p.m.
