Women’s Soccer Falls to UMass Boston 2-0

Framingham, Mass.  — Behind a goal and an assist from junior forward Julienne McCuish (Mashpee, Mass.) the University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team defeated the Framingham State University Rams 2-0 today in non-conference women's soccer action at Maple Street Field this afternoon.  With the win the Beacons improve to 11-4-3 on the year, while the loss drops the Rams to 7-9.

After a scoreless first half that saw each team take seven shots, the Rams had the first chance to break into the scoring column in the opening minute of the second half.  Freshman Melissa D'Angelo (Whitman, Mass.) took a shot from the right side that hit the cross bar and bounced straight down, but before the Rams could get a foot on the loose ball a Beacon defender knocked it out of bounds.

Just a few minutes later, the Rams had another chance to break the deadlock as sophomore Megan Gangell (Lee, Mass.) broke away from the Beacon defense and beat the Beacon's goalkeeper with a shot that looked like it was going to find the back of the net, but UMass Boston defender Brittney Spencer (West Brookfield, Mass.) knocked the ball away just before it broke the plane.

UMass Boston's offense came alive with several scoring chance over the next fifteen minutes and they were finally able to break the scoreless tie in the 70th minute.  Campbell sent a cross into the box to freshman forward Tayla Andrews (Plymouth, Mass.) and she was able to place a shot in the back of the net for what proved to be the game winner.

The Beacons kept up their offensive pressure and tacked on an insurance goal in the 82nd minute as Campbell collected a rebound in the box off an initial shot from junior Kristin Mulry (Holbrook, Mass.) and scored in the open net.

UMass Boston held a slight 15-13 advantage in shots for the game, while the Rams held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Framingham State freshman Kaitlyn Rossi (Pepperell, Mass.) made seven saves in a losing effort, while freshman Katie Coscia (Pittsfield, Mass.) made six saves and picked up the shutout victory for the Beacons.

The Rams return to action on Saturday as they conclude the regular season at Westfield State at 1 p.m., while the Beacons travel to Rhode Island College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
