Women’s Basketball Holds Off Newbury; Win 72-68

Framingham, Mass.- Framingham State senior Lauren Donahue (Attleboro, Mass.) rolled in a layup with 17 seconds to play to break the tie as the Rams defeated Newbury College 72-68 in non-conference action Wednesday evening. With the win the Rams improve to 3-2 and the Nighthawks fall to 2-3.

The Rams were paced by junior forward Tiphani Harris (Revere, Mass.) who registered a double-double scoring a career-high 21 points and picking up 11 rebounds. Senior Raegan Mulherin (Baldwinville, Mass.) picked up ten points and sophomore Emily Velozo (Tewksbury, Mass.) added nine off the bench in the win for the Rams.

Jaymesha Sanders (West Haven, Conn.) and Savannah Olsen (Battle Creek, MI) both picked up double-doubles for Newbury,  each scoring 21 points with 11 and 14 rebounds, respectively. Destiny Spears (Arnold, MD) added 15 points and 14 boards for a double-double of her own.

The Rams went on a 9-2 run late in the third quarter capped by a Bryanna Santos (Brockton, Mass.) made free-throw to push their lead to 10, 55-45. The Nighthawks answered with a 13-3 run to tie the game around midway through the 4th quarter. After four ties and three lead changes Donahue hit her game-winner with 17 seconds to go. The Rams forced a stop on the next possession and causing the Nighthawks to foul. Mallory DeFeo (Arlington, Mass.) made her two shots from the line to seal the victory.

The high paced game featured 39 turnovers, 24 for Newbury and 15 by Framingham State. The Rams took advantage turning those turnovers into 21 points to just 8 for Newbury.

The Rams were 24-of-62 (37.5%) from the floor and 21-of-25 (84%) from the line. The Nighthawks shot 39.7% (25-of-63) from the field and 15-for-25 (62.5%) from the charity stripe.

The Rams are idle until next Tuesday, December 5th when they travel to UMass Boston for a 5:30pm tip. The Nighthawks return to the hardwood on Saturday, December 2nd when they host Southern Vermont.
