Women's Basketball Falls at MCLA, 57-45
North Adams, Mass. - The MCLA women's basketball team held
visiting Framingham State to 19% shooting on the day en route to a
57-45 MASCAC victory. The win moves MCLA to 14-8 on the
season, tying a school record for wins, and 3-7 in the
conference. The Rams fall to 10-11, 4-7 in the MASCAC.
Freshmen Lucy Tremblay (East Greenbush, NY) and sophomore Jen
Wehner (Cooperstown, NY) led the Trailblazers, mirroring each other
with game highs of 17 points and 12 boards.
MCLA never trailed as they took a quick 3-0 lead on Tremblay's
opening three pointer. The Trailblazers would extend the
advantage to six on a jumper by Wehner, giving the hosts a 13-7
edge with 11:07 remaining.
The Rams would eventually cut the lead to two (13-11) on a Megan
Gangell (Lee, Mass.) layup with 9:28 left, but MCLA would respond
with a 6-0 burst fueled by a Tremblay trey and a Wehner bucket.
After a pair of free throws from Framingham's Kia Minor (Oak
Bluffs, Mass.) made the score 19-13, the Rams leading scorer Toya
Chester (Leominster, Mass.)was injured defending MCLA's Jade
Prickett. Without their leading scorer, the Rams would
struggle to find their offensive rhythm. MCLA would extend
the lead to nine, 24-15, at the half.
Framingham would cut the lead to seven at 27-20 with 18:32 left,
but MCLA would go on an 11-2 run to put the game away. They
would keep the lead at double digits the rest of the way, leading
the Rams by as many 19 in the second half.
Wehner added six blocks and three steals in the win.
Framingham was led by Minor's 16 points and 10 boards. Nicole
McConaghy (Medford, Mass.) added 10 rebounds as well.
The Trailblazers will attempt to establish a new mark for wins in a
season on Tuesday when they host senior night against Fitchburg
State, while the Rams close out their regular season on Tuesday at
Westfield State at 5:30 p.m.
