Women's Basketball Edged by MCLA, 51-46

Framingham, MA - Junior forward Laura Silverman's (Ballston Lake, NY) lay-up with less than a minute left to play lifted the visiting MCLA Trailblazers to a 51-46 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) win today over the Framingham State Rams at Framingham's Athletic Center. With the win the Trailblazers improve to 14-9 on the season and 4-6 in the MASCAC, while the Rams fall to 8-15 overall and 2-9 in the MASCAC.

Silverman finished the game with a team-high 11 points and 12 boards, while senior guard Larissa Miner (Greenfield, MA) chipped in 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor.  Freshman forward Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, NY) chipped in nine points and eight boards for the Trailblazers.

The Rams were led by senior guard Allie Hart (Somerset, MA) who scored a game-high 12 points and sophomore forward Toya Chester (Ayer, MA) who added 11 points and three assists.  Sophomore Jill Johnson (Mansfield, MA) chipped in a double double for the Rams as she scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with three steals.

The Rams opened the game on an 8-1 run over the first six minutes before MCLA responded with a 15-7 run to take their first lead at 16-15 with 6:40 left in the first half. The two teams would go back and forth over the final six minutes and headed into the half tied at 23-23.

The second half would go back and forth as the lead changed hands six times with neither team holding a lead larger than five points.

The Rams held a 44-42 lead on a lay-up from Hart with 3:32 remaining before the Trailblazers came back to take the lead.  Silverman hit one of two free throws to pull the Trailblazers within one and Wehner hit two freebies to put MCLA ahead 45-44 with 1:25 remaining.

After an MCLA timeout, sophomore Nicole McConaghy (Medford, MA) found Chester alone in the corner for a jumper to put the Rams back up by one.  MCLA pushed the ball up the floor and Silverman answered with a lay-up to put the Trailblazers ahead for good at 47-46.  The Rams were forced to foul and Silverman and Wehner hit four of six freebies to seal the win.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday night as they host Westfield State at 5:30 p.m., while the Trailblazers travel to Fitchburg State also on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
