Lancers Hold Off Women's Basketball

Framingham, MA - Junior Brianne Flanders (Southampton, MA) notched a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds to help lead the Worcester State Lancers to a 61-50 win this afternoon over the Framingham State Rams in MASCAC women's basketball action.  With the win, the Lancers snap a seven game skid and improve to 6-15 overall and 2-7 in the MASCAC while the Rams fall to 8-13 overall and are also 2-7 in the conference.

Sophomore Alexis George (Worcester, MA) and senior Erin McCullough (Harvard, MA) chipped in 11 points apiece for the Lancers, while junior Reilly O'Keefe (Warren, MA) and freshman Brittney McGinness (Billerica, MA) each chipped in with nine points for the Lancers.

Junior forward Toya Chester (Leominster, MA) paced the Rams with a game-high 14 points including 10 points in the second half to go along with eight rebounds and four steals in the game while sophomore Jill Johnson (Mansfield, MA) tallied seven points with four steals.

The Lancers opened the games first seven minutes with a commanding 16-0 lead before the Rams scored their first field goal - a three by sophomore guard Jill Jones (Westborough, MA) with 13:08 remaining.  The Lancers went into the half with a 31-20 lead.

With 15:50 remaining in the game, Worcester State led 35-23 before the Rams went on a run and cut the deficit to seven points at 35-28 with 13:32 remaining, but that was as close as they would get. The Lancers extended the lead to 54-32 with 5:14 left and maintained a double-figure advantage to cruise to the victory. 

Worcester State shot 42% from the floor in for the game while they held the Rams to just 29% shooting from the field in the second half, 33% for the game and just 3-for-17 from beyond the arc in the contest. The Lancers also held the advantage in rebounds (45-32), points in the paint (28-22) and with second chance opportunities (14-6).

The Rams return to action on Tuesday night as they travel to Salem State at 6 p.m. while the Lancers host Fitchburg State also at 6 p.m.
