Softball Closes 2016 Campaign with a Pair of Loses to Brandeis

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University softball team closed the 2016 season with a pair of losses this afternoon to Brandeis University in non-conference action at Maple Street Field.  The Judges took the opener 7-5 before taking an 8-2 win in the nightcap.

With the wins the Judges close the season at 18-19, while the Rams end the year at 13-27.

The Judges grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first of the opener on an RBI single to right by senior Madison Sullivan.  The Rams took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second on a two run single to center by junior Tiffanie Marsh (Tewksbury, Mass.) and an RBI single from sophomore Anna Dziok (Southampton, Mass.).

The Judges took the lead for good in the top of the third as Sullivan came though once again. This time with a two run double to left center.  Senior Jordan Buscetto and freshman Marysa Massoia followed with RBI single putting the Judges up 5-3.

The Rams cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from freshman Rachel Desrochers (Westford, Mass.) that plated junior Kylie Boyle (Billerica, Mass.) who had doubled earlier in the inning.

The Judges tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth including Sullivan's fourth RBI of the game to extend the lead to 7-4.  The Rams added a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Dayna Marchant (East Bridgewater, Mass.) to reach the final margin.

Sadie-Rose Apfel earned the win for the Judges in the circle going the distance and allowing five earned runs on 14 hits with two strikeouts.  Sophomore Jessica Pietersen (Norton, Mass.) took the loss for the Rams surrendering seven earned runs on 13 hits with a walk.

The Judges once again took the early lead with a run in their first at bat of game two as Sullivan drove in a run on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.

The lead was short-lived as the Rams took a 2-1 in the bottom of the frame on a two run homer to center by Dziok.

Brandeis went ahead for good in the top of the third inning as they plated six runs.  The Judges loaded the bases with no outs and senior Madison Gagnon delivered an RBI single through the left side tying the game at 2-2.  Sullivan worked a walk to force in the go ahead run.  Allison Hecht, Buscetto and Madison Hunter added RBI base hits to cap the scoring in the frame.

The Judges added a single run in the top of the seventh to reach the final margin.

Melissa Soleimani earned the win in the circle for the Judges going six scoreless innings in relief and scattering three hits.  Senior Natasha Arseneau (Waltham, Mass.) took the loss for the Rams in her final start going 6.2 innings and allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 14 hits.
