UMass Boston Sweeps Non-Conference Twinbill with Softball

Framingham, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Boston softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon with the Framingham State Rams at Maple Street Field.  The Beacons won the opener 4-1 before taking the nightcap 7-2.

With the wins, the Beacons improve to 10-6 on the year, while the Rams fall to 6-14.

The Beacons took the opener by a score of 4-1 behind a solid pitching performance from freshman Annie Thomas (Lunenburg, Mass.).  Thomas went the distance allowing one earned run on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

The visitors tallied a single run in the top of the first on an RBI double from junior Lauren Mitsiaris (Taunton, Mass.) and the top of third on an RBI double by freshman Roxanne Vento (Arlington, Mass.).  The Beacons added a third run in the top of the fourth on an RBI double to deep center by freshman Taylor Pawlina (Woonsocket, RI) that scored freshman Taylor Marcotte (Agawam, Mass.) from first.

The Rams plated a single run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from sophomore Megan Downing (Hanson, Mass.) that plated junior Tiffanie Marsh (Tewksbury, Mass.) who had doubled to lead off the inning.

The Beacons added a final run in the top of the sixth to reach the final margin.  The Rams loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Thomas was able to induce a ground out to end the game.

In the night cap, the Beacons plated a pair of run in the top of second a two RBI single by Pawlina.  The Rams cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single to center by Downing that scored Marsh who had tripled earlier in the inning. 

A Pawlina sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth pushed the lead back two.  A single run in top of the sixth and three in the seventh including a Pawlina two run double  pushed the lead to 7-1.

Marsh plated the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder's choice that scored junior Kylie Boyle (Billerica, Mass.).

The Rams are back in tomorrow afternoon when they host MCLA for a pair of MASCAC games beginning at 1 p.m., while the Beacons are slated to host UMass Dartmouth on Saturday in a Little East doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
