Clermont, Fla. – The Framingham State University softball team suffered a pair of losses this afternoon at the NTC Games falling 10-0 to Washington and Jefferson in five innings and 8-3 to Amherst College.
The Rams (0-4) fell behind early to the Presidents who put a pair of runs in their first at bat and followed that up with two more in the second. Washington and Jefferson pulled away in the fifth with six runs to reach the final margin.
The Rams struggled from the plate in the game collecting just one hit, a single up the middle off the bat of sophomore Tiffanie Marsh (Tewksbury, Mass.) in the bottom of the first inning.
Marsh was tagged with the loss in the circle for the Rams going four innings and allowing eight runs, all earned, on nine hits. Juniors Kourtney Kacian (Gardner, Mass.) and Natasha Arseneau (Waltham, Mass.) pitched the final inning for the Rams.
In game two, Amherst grabbed a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second inning. The Rams answered with a run of their own in the top of the third to cut the lead in half. The Rams loaded the bases on singles from Marsh and freshman Dayna Marchant (East Bridgewater, Mass.) after freshman Anna Dziok (Southampton, Mass.) had reached on an error. Sophomore Kylie Boyle (Billerica, Mass.) followed with an RBI groundout.
Amherst pushed the advantage back to two with an RBI double in the fourth, but the Rams tied the game in the top of the fifth. Casey Fanning (East Boston, Mass.) walked and Dziok followed with a double. Marsh followed with an RBI ground out and Boyle reached on a fielding error that allowed Dziok to score tying the game at 3-3.
Amherst answered with four in the fifth and one in the sixth to secure the victory.
Arseneau suffered the loss for the Rams going four innings and allowing seven runs, six earned on 12 hits, while Marsh went two innings in relief and allowed just one unearned run.
The Rams are back in action at the NTC Games on Wednesday when they face Clarkson and Saint Lawrence at 9 am 11 a.m.
