Softball Drops a Pair at NTC Games

Clermont, Fla. – The Framingham State University softball team suffered a pair of defeats this morning at the NTC Games as the Rams were defeated 3-0 by Wellesley College and 9-1 in five innings by Calvin College (MI).

Wellesley took a 1-0 lead in their first at bat as Jaclyn Tsang reached on a dropped their strike and advanced to third on a wild pitch and a Framingham throwing error.  Tsang came around to score the game's first run on an RBI double to center off the bat of Lauren Goldfarb.

The Blue added two more in the fourth on an RBI double from Emilyrose Havrilla that drove in Goldfarb and Jayne Ellis, who had started the inning with a double and single.

Wellesley starting pitcher Lindsay Johnson went the distance to record the shutout victory.  Johnson allowed just two hits while striking out 13 and walking a pair. Framingham State's Yaya Faria (Acton, Mass.) picked up the loss allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits in four innings of work.  Sophomore Kelly Neagelin (Scituate, Mass.) tossed two innings of scoreless relief.

Sophomore Jess Morrissey (Barre, Mass.) and junior Andrea Smith (Milford, Mass.) each singled for the Rams in the game.

In game two against Calvin, the Rams (0-4) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.  Freshman Jess Anthony (Stoneham, Mass.) led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Anthony took third on a Taylor McGrail (Worcester, Mass.) ground out and then scampered home on a wild pitch.

Calvin answered with a run in the top of the third on an RBI bloop double to left off the bat off Lydia Gildea to tie the game.

The Calvin offense, fueled by back-to-back solo homeruns from Lina Avila and Janelle Agren, exploded for five runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to secure the five inning victory.

Anthony, freshman Kourtney Kacian (Gardner, Mass.) and junior Alyssa Begin (Salem, Mass.) recorded the Rams three hits in the game.

The Rams return to action tomorrow at the NTC Games with a pair of games against Wesleyan and William Patterson.
