Bristol, R.I. – The Framingham State University Softball team split a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon against Roger Williams University, dropping the opener 6-1 before rebounding to win the nightcap 2-6.

The Hawks began the scoring in the bottom of the second with a solo home run by Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) to deep left field to give RWU a 1-0 lead. Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) followed suit with a homer of her own on the first pitch she saw to left field for back-to-back dingers and 2-0 Hawk lead.

Later on in the inning, Kaitlyn Costa (Cranston, R.I.) brought in Molly Petrone (Northborough, Mass.) and Julia Giancola (Durham, Conn.) with a two-RBI single to add to the Hawk lead. Kara Lewis (Taunton, Mass.) capped off the inning with a ground-rule RBI double to score Costa and give the Hawks a 5-0 lead.

In the third, Giancola launched a shot into center field that ended up vaulting the fielder over the fence while Giancola was rounding second. Giancola would be awarded home on a ground-rule double and a two-base error after the ball was touched while the player was out of the field of play.

Molly McKinnon (Framingham, Mass.) helped get the Rams on the board in the following inning with a ground-rule RBI double of her own, scoring teammate Taylor Ezold (Westfield, Mass.). Yet that would be all Framingham State would muster as they were shut out in the final three innings for the Hawk win.

Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) earned her eighth win of the year, allowing a run on six hits with seven strikeouts. Costa finished 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI while Giancola was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Alyssa Begin (Salem, Mass.) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) in two innings. Ezold went 2-for-3 with a run in the game, while Kaitlyn Corriveault (Blackstone, Mass.) was 2-for-3.

In the nightcap, Corriveault started off the scoring with an RBI single in the second inning, scoring Alyssa Shea (Lakeville, Mass.) for a 1-0 Ram lead. The Hawks came back in the bottom of the inning on Giancola's RBI double to tie the game at one.

Begin regained the lead for the Rams in the third, scoring on a wild pitch to put Framingham State back on top 2-1. In the third, Corriveault gave the Rams a 3-1 lead in an unconventional manner. After reaching on a leadoff walk, she stole second and third with two outs, then came in on what was ruled a dropped third strike by Jess Morrissey (Barre, Mass.). Although Morrissey appeared to be on her way to the dugout, the umpire never called her out, allowing Corriveault to make a heads-up play and score.

In the fifth, the Rams plated two more runners on a base hit by Ezold and a sacrifice fly by Shea.

Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) brought in Costa with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, but Framingham State got the run right back in the sixth on an infield RBI hit by Begin. The 6-2 lead for the Rams would hold, giving them the win.

Alysia Morrissette (Ware, Mass.) got the win, allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings. Begin finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Shea was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Lewis was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs in four innings. Atkinson and Giancola each finished with a hit and an RBI for the Hawks.

Roger Williams (15-18) travels to Endicott on Saturday, while Framingham State (12-18) hosts Plymouth State tomorrow.
