Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University softball team was defeated twice this afternoon by Bridgewater State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader at Farley Field.  The Bears won the opening game by a score of 8-0 in five innings and took the nightcap 10-1 in six.

In the first game, Bridgewater State (17-7, 3-1 MASCAC) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI double by junior Melissa Harmon (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and an RBI single from senior Michaela Ferreira (Fall River, Mass.).

The Bears used four runs all scored with two out in the fourth to open a comfortable 6-0 advantage as starting pitcher Amber White (Middleboro, Mass.) surrendered just one hit through the first four innings.  Harmon and sophomore Jasmyn McCone (Taunton, Mass.) plated runs with RBI singles and catcher Brianna Strecker (Waterford, Conn.) plated two more with a double to deep left.

Two unearned runs for the Bears in the top of the fifth on RBI singles from junior Jennifer Shaw (Brockton, Mass.) and Strecker gave Bridgewater State the 8-0 five inning victory.

White improved her season record to 9-3 with the complete game victory as she allowed just one hit, a leadoff single to sophomore Alyssa Begin (Salem, Mass.), and struck out seven with a walk.

Yaya Faria (Acton, Mass.) picked up the loss for the Rams (9-13, 2-2 MASCAC) going four innings and allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts and six walks.  Begin pitched one inning of relief allowing two unearned runs on two hits.

In game two, the Bears capitalized on a pair of Framingham errors in the third inning to score a pair of unearned runs and take a 2-0 lead. Ferreira picked up the lone RBI in the inning with a run scoring base hit to left.

The Rams loaded the bases in the second inning with no outs and had runners on second and third with one out in the fourth, but BSU starting pitcher Meghan Dunn (Colchester, Conn.) was able to record five strikeouts to end both threats and keep the Rams off the board.

A five run fifth inning extended the Bears lead to 7-0.  The big hits in the inning were a Strecker solo homerun to center and a bases clearing triple from senior Stephanie Burns (North Attleboro, Mass.).

The Rams got one back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single to right off the bat of junior Taylor Ezold (Westfield, Mass.) that drove in sophomore Kate Corriveault (Blackstone, Mass.) who was hit by a pitch leading the inning off.

Three more in the sixth pushed the Bears lead to 10-1.  All three runs were unearned as the Bears once again capitalized on a pair of errors in the Rams infield.

Dunn recorded the victory in the circle upping her season record to 8-4, while senior Alysia Morrissette (Ware, Mass.) picked up the loss for the Rams allowing 10 runs, five earned, on 11 hits with five strikeouts.

Strecker finished the day with three hits, four RBI and four runs scored for the Bears, while Harmon went 4-of-6 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Begin and senior Alyssa Shea (Lakeville, Mass.) paced the Rams with a pair of hits apiece.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Becker beginning at 3:30 p.m., while the Bears resume action on Tuesday with a pair of games at Nichols at 3 p.m.
