Softball Splits two at Rebel Spring Games

Softball Splits two at Rebel Spring Games

Kissimmee, Fla. – The Framingham State University softball team split a pair of games this afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games as the Rams defeated Daniel Webster College 6-1 this morning and were defeated 3-1 by Utica in the afternoon.

Senior Alysia Morrissette (Ware, Mass.) pitched a gem in the opener tossing a complete game to pick up her first victory of the season.  Morrissette surrendered just one unearned run on three hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

Junior second baseman Taylor Ezold (Westfield, Mass.) was 2-for-3 from the plate in the game with a pair of RBI and a run scored, while freshman Tiffany Agostini (Rehoboth, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with three RBI.  Morrissette and sophomore Alyssa Begin (Salem, Mass.) each picked up a pair of hits in the game.

The Rams (2-2) scored two runs in the third inning to take control of the game.  Begin doubled, stole third and came around to score on an RBI infield single by Agostini.  Agostini scored on the play as well after a pair of Daniel Webster over throws.

In the fourth the Rams extended their lead to 4-0.  Morrissette reached on an error with one out and freshman Jess Morrissey (Barre, Mass.) bunted for a base hit giving the Rams running on first and second with one out.  Senior Sherren Doyle (Middleboro, Mass.) sacrificed the runners to second and third and Ezold drove them in with a double down the leftfield line.

Daniel Webster pushed across a single run in the top of the fifth.  Freshman Sarah Durocher (Keene, NH) led off with a single down the first base line and advanced to second on an error in the Rams outfield.  Durocher advanced to third on a groundout and came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of senior Amanda Wilson (Merrimack, NH).

That was all the Eagles would get as Morrissette retired the final six batters she faced.  The Rams added two more in the bottom of the sixth on a two RBI single off the bat of Agostini to reach the final score of 6-1.

In the second game, the Rams surrendered three unearned runs in the first inning and that was all Utica would need to secure the victory.  Utica managed to plate three runs in the first with just one hit thanks to a Framingham error, a pair of walks and three pass balls.

The Rams were able to cut into the Utica's lead in the fourth when they scored their only run of the game.  Begin led off with her second hit of the game and came around to score on an RBI single to left center from starting pitcher Yaya Faria (Acton, Mass.).

After struggling in the first, Faria settled down allowing only two hits for the remainder of the game giving the Rams a chance, but Utica starting pitcher Heather Kingsbury (Williamson, NY) surrendered just the one earned run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts to secure the victory.

The Rams return to action tomorrow at the Rebel Spring Games against Skidmore at 1 p.m. and Defiance at 3 p.m.
