Worcester State Takes Two from Softball

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University softball team was swept this afternoon in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader with Worcester State.  The Lancers won the day's first game 8-4 and then held off a seventh inning rally by the Rams to pick up the 4-2 victory in the nightcap.

The Rams fall to 6-18 on the season with the two losses and 2-4 in the MASCAC, while the Lancers improve to 16-8 overall and 6-2 in conference.

The Rams grabbed their only lead of the day in the first inning of game one.  Freshman Kim Danish (Milford, Mass.) led off the inning with a single and came around to score on senior Andrea DiTerlizzi's (Shrewsbury, Mass.) double to left center.

The Rams maintained the 1-0 advantage until the top of the third inning when Ashley Howe (Winchendon, Mass.) belted a solo homerun to centerfield knotting the game at 1-1.

The Lancers offense capitalized on a Rams fielding miscue in the fourth to score three runs and take a 4-1 lead.  WSU starting pitcher Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) doubled to lead off the inning and came around to score as Alex Kerr's (Franklin, Mass.) fly ball to center was misplayed by the Rams outfield.  Aimee Lamoureuz (E. Brookfield, Mass.) and Lauren Besoxxi (Milford, Mass.) drove in the other two runs in the inning with RBI hits.

Worcester State added three more in the fifth on a steal of home by Howe, an RBI double by Lamoureux and another Rams error to open up a 7-1 lead.

That was all Mahoney would need as she went the distance to earn her eighth win of the season allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts.

The Rams added two runs in the bottom of the fifth as DiTerlizzi's belted her second double of the game driving in Danish.  Freshman Alyssa Begin (Salem, Mass.) ran for DiTerlizzi and scored on a Lancer error.

Framingham State scored another unearned run off Mahoney in the sixth as Katie Donovan (Holden, Mass.) struck out but reached on a pass ball and advanced to second on a throwing error by the WSU catcher.  Senior Kasey Phipps (Westford, Mass.) ran for Donovan and scored two batters later on an RBI ground out by junior Christy Ulak (Rehoboth, Mass.).

The Lancers added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Besozzi to reach the final margin of 8-4.  Besozzi finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Lamoureux went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

DiTerlizzi went 4-for-4 in the game with two RBI and two doubles, while Danish also chipped in two hits and two runs scored.

In game two the Lancers scored four runs in the third inning on RBI hits from Lamoureux, Mahoney and Besozzi to take a 4-0 lead.

The Rams chipped away with a single run in the bottom of the inning as sophomore Kendra Fisher (Abington, Mass.) singled to left and scored from first when classmate Taylor Ezold's (Westfield, Mass.) single scooted past the Lancers outfield.

Framingham State starting pitcher Alysia Morrissette (Ware, Mass.) settled in and allowed only four base runners for the remainder of the game.  Morrissette allowed four earned runs in the game on seven hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Worcester State starter Hannah Everson (Methuen, Mass.) also settled in after allowing a run in the third allowing only three hits in the final four innings.  Everson kept the Rams off the scoreboard until the seventh when Donovan doubled and scored on a Ulak sacrifice fly to right to reach the final margin of 4-2.  Everson allowed two runs in the game, one earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts.

Mahoney picked up a pair of hits for the Lancers in game two, while Fisher led the Rams with a pair of hits and a run scored.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday with a pair of MASCAC games as they host Massachusetts Maritime at 3:30 p.m., while the Lancers entertain WPI in a pair of non-conference games Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m.
