Softball Drops Two at UMass Boston

Boston, Mass. – Senior southpaw Emily Wolf (Salem, NH) earned her 19th career victory and junior starting pitcher Katie Corey (Weymouth, MA) tossed a complete game shutout to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston softball team past Framingham State University, 6-5, 5-0, in this afternoon's doubleheader at the Clark Athletic Center field on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons have now won nine of their last 11 games and improve to 11-5 on the year, while the Rams fall to 2-10.

In game one, Wolf pitched a hitless sixth and seven inning and UMass Boston was able to rally for two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off win. Freshman designated player Erika Vecchiet (Pequannock, NJ) connected on a clutch two-out RBI double to even the score at 5-5 before she came around to score the winning run following a Framingham State miscue, propelling UMass Boston to the 6-5 win.

The Beacons trailed for the majority of the contest until their bats came to life in the sixth inning when they exploded for four runs to cut the Framingham State lead to 5-4. Corey opened the frame with a single to left before sophomore shortstop Taryn Asta (Marshfield, MA) followed suit with a single to left to put two on and nobody out for junior left fielder Jaci Goodwin (Melrose, MA). Goodwin reached base via a bunt single to load the bases for senior centerfielder Christina Polosonetti (Revere, MA) who ripped a ball in the hole at short, beating the throw for the infield hit while driving home Corey for the first UMass Boston run of the afternoon.

Up next, sophomore catcher Sue Killilea (Abington, MA) drove in the second Beacon run with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Asta to cut the lead to 5-2. Senior third baseman Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) loaded the bases back up with a single before Vecchiet drove in the third UMB run on an infield ground out. Sophomore second baseman Kasey O'Connell (Quincy, MA) would get into the action with an RBI single, driving home Polsonetti to pull the Beacons within one before the Rams would retire the side.

The Rams jumped out to an early 3-0 with an unearned run in the second and a two-run homer by freshman catcher Kim Danish (Milford, MA) in the third. They would add to their lead in the fifth with an RBI single from sophomore pitcher Yaya Faria (Action, MA) and a sacrifice fly to right field from junior shortstop Christy Ulak (Rehoboth, MA) to put the visitors on top, 5-0.

Faria was in total control on the mound, allowing only four hits through four innings of play before she was relived of her duties before the start of the fifth in lieu of freshman pitcher Alyssa Begin (Salem, MA). Begin would suffer the loss for the Rams, allowing six runs (five earned) over the final 2 2/3 innings of work. For UMass Boston, Wolf improves to 6-2 on the year with the win and moves into sole possession of second place all-time with 19 career victories.

Corey was the story in game two, hurling the seven-inning complete game shutout for UMass Boston, allowing only five hits, all singles, while recording five strikeouts to improve to 5-3 this season.

At the plate, the Beacons would get all the run support they would need in the first, scoring two on RBI groundouts by Nasta and Vecchiet to take the 2-0 lead.

In the third, Nasta's sacrifice fly would make it a 3-0 game before UMass Boston would add to its lead in the fifth following an RBI triple by Polsonetti and a sacrifice fly by Killilea to round out the 5-0 score.

Junior pitcher Alysia Morrissette (Ware, MA) threw well in defeat for the Rams, allowing only six hits over five innings of work but suffered the loss falling to 1-5 on the year. Senior pitcher Andrea DiTerlizzi (Shrewsbury, MA) hurled a perfect inning in relief out of the pen, preventing any further UMB damage.

UMass Boston will return to action on Saturday, April 2 when they open up their Little East Conference schedule with a doubleheader vs. Western CT State starting at 1:00 p.m. while the Rams take to the diamond again tomorrow when they head to Cambridge, MA for a twinbill with Lesley University starting at 3:00 p.m.
