Game 2 Box Socre

Framingham, Mass. — The Framingham State College softball team earned a split in a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) softball doubleheader today with Westfield State at Farley Field in Framingham.  The Rams won the first game 8-5 before dropping the second game 3-1 in eight innings.  With the split the Rams are now 6-2 in the MASCAC and 10-14 overall, while the Owls move to 16-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

The Rams took a 5-0 lead after an inning.  Junior Andrea DiTerlizzi (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led off the game with a home run to right and freshman Kendra Fisher (Abington, Mass.) followed with a double.  Fisher came around to score the Rams second run on a wild pitch.  Freshmen Taylor Ezold (Westfield, Mass.) and Kelsey Power (Hollidaysburg, PA) each drove in single runs on ground outs, while sophomore Alyssa Shea (Lakeville, Mass.), who reached base on an error, scored on a wild pitch.

Westfield State scored single runs in the third on an RBI double by senior Kim Brennan (Douglas, Mass.) and fourth on an RBI double from Kerin DeGirolamo (North Attleboro, Mass.) to cut the Rams lead to 5-2.

The Rams scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 8-2.  Fisher and shortstop Christy Ulak (Rehoboth, Mass.) picked up RBI singles in the inning, while catcher Katie Donovan (Holden, Mass.) drove in the other run with a double.

Westfield State scored three times in the top of the fifth to pull back within three runs, but that was as close as they would get as DiTerlizzi shut the Owls down in their final two at bats.

DiTerlizzi went the distance and picked up the win allowing five runs (four earned) on 13 this with four strikeouts, while sophomore Ashtyn Welcome (Northfield, Mass.) picked up the loss for the Owls allowing eight runs (three earned) on five hits in 3.2 innings.

Sophomore Madeline Tomich (Alford, Mass.) pitched a gem in game two for the Owls and picked up the win.  She threw eight solid innings surrendering only three hits and an unearned run while striking out nine.  Framingham State starter ALysia Morrissette (Ware, Mass.) picked up the loss surrendering three runs (two earned) on 11 hits in eight innings.

The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as Ulak reached on an error and came around to score on an RBI double by Donovan.

Framingham State held the slim 1-0 lead until the top of the seventh inning when freshman Brittany Dussault (Chicopee, Mass.) doubled with two outs and came around to score the tying run on a Framingham State fielding miscue that sent the games to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Brianna Isaacs (Yarmouthport, Mass.) singled and after a fly out advanced to third on a double by Kristyn Carroll (Brockton, Mass.) giving the Owls runners on first and second with two out.  Lisa Policelli (Tewksbury, Mass.) had the big blow in the inning – a two out two RBI double – that gave the Owls their first lead of the game.

Tomich retired the first two Rams in the top of the eighth before DiTerlizzi singled to keep the Rams chances alive.  Fisher worked a walk giving the Rams first and second with two outs, but Tomich induced a ground out for the final play of the game.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday as they host Lesley at 3 p.m., while the Owls travel to Bridgewater State on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
