BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's soccer team notched its fifth straight win to open the 2013 season, coming away with a 1-0 win over Framingham State University Wednesday evening.

Both teams came out firing in the first half, with the Rams putting up eight shots to the Hawks' 12. Framingham State nearly got on the board in the 31stminute, with Nick Cotter (Sandwich, Mass.) setting up Gilvan Mendes (Framingham, Mass.) with a nice cross on the right side. However Mendes' shot sailed away from the net, keeping the Rams off the board.

The Hawks managed to get on top in the 36th minute, with Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine) crossing the ball into the box to Trevor Sparda (Scarborough, Maine), Sparda was able to take a quick chip up the middle for his first collegiate goal.

The second half was punctuated by tough luck and missed opportunities for both teams. In the 60th minute, James Doleman (Sandwich, Mass.) put up a shot from the back of the box that would have tied the game, but Cooper Allebrand (Santa Barbara, Calif.) managed to get a head on the ball with a jumping stop to maintain the Hawk lead.

In addition, the Rams were called for offsides eight times during the contest. Conversely, the Hawks had multiple shots that either sailed wide of the net or hit the post. In the end, RWU was able to maintain its one-goal lead and hold on for the win.

Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.) earned his second shutout win of the year, making four saves in the game. Kiki Anzoateguí (Peabody, Mass.) took the loss, making one save on the evening.

Roger Williams (5-0-0) opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday at Wentworth, while Framingham Sate (0-4-0) searches for its first win on Saturday when the team hosts UMass-Dartmouth in a non-conference match up.
