Men's Soccer Falls to Wesleyan 3-0

Middletown, Conn. --- In just the second-ever meeting of the colleges, Wesleyan defeated Framingham State University, 3-0, in its men's soccer season opener while Framingham dropped to 0-2 on the young season.

Wesleyan freshman Dylan Hoy factored into each of the Cardinals' goals with two tallies and an assist to power the Wesleyan attack.  Wesleyan generated an 18-7 edge in total shots and got three saves from freshman goalie Derek Grammer for his first career shutout.

Wesleyan got the game-winner off the foot of junior Omar Bravo in the 16th minute when he received a pass in the middle from Hoy and fired a left-footed banana kick from 16 yards out that caught the net just inside the left post waist-high past Ram keeper William Levitsky.  This came 11 minutes after Levitsky had saved a Wesleyan penalty kick by sophomore Max Jones after a foul in the box.  Levitsky guessed correctly and dove to his right to stop the low kick.

The score stayed 1-0 through just over 69 minutes of play before Hoy scored the first of his two goals in a span of just 6:06.  Senior Nate Howell moved the ball up the left flank and pushed the ball ahead to Hoy, who pounded a high shot from a sharp angle into the top left corner of the net in the 70th minute.  Hoy then converted a free kick from 25 yards out with a high shot to the right side of the net in the 76th minute.

Levitsky played 75:19 and had two saves while yielding three goals.  Kiko Anzoategui played the final 14:41 for Framingham and had no saves or goals against.

When the teams met for the first time in Framingham, Mass. a year ago, they played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw.

Up next for the Cardinals is the opening NESCAC contest of the year as Wesleyan travels to Bowdoin Sat., Sept. 7.  Framingham returns to action Saturday as well, taking on WPI in its third straight road game as the Rams play four in a row away from home to inaugurate the campaign.
