MIT Blanks Men’s Soccer 3-0

MIT Blanks Men’s Soccer 3-0

Framingham, Mass. – The MIT Engineers received a pair of assists from freshman Austin Freel (San Diego, Calif.) as they defeated the Framingham State University Rams 3-0 this afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Maple Street Field.

With the win, the Engineers remain unbeaten on the season at 3-0, while the Rams are still in search of their first victory at 0-1-1.

The Rams offense started the game strong and they had a chance to score first just under 20 minutes into the game.  Senior Will Menter (Haverhill, Mass.) fired a shot from 25 yards out that deflected off an MIT defender.  Sophomore Cory Cardeiro (Westport, Mass.) got a head on the deflection but his bid sailed just high.

MIT's offense came alive late in the half as they had several quality scoring chances and were finally able to break the scoreless deadlock.  In the 37th minute Freel fed classmate Sean Bingham (Garden City, N.Y.) in the middle.  Bingham made a move around a Ram defender and beat the goalkeeper with a well-placed shot in the corner for what would prove to be the game winner.

The Engineers had two opportunities to extend their lead in the final ten minutes of the first half, but Framingham Stat goal keeper Sam Yoder (Southbridge, Mass.) made a pair of great saves to keep the game 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, MIT doubled their lead in the 59th minute as Freel launched a direct kick into the box from the right sideline.  Senior Ben Lewis (West Hartford, Conn.) was able to get a head on the ball and send it into the back of the net.

The Engineers final goal of the day was a Framingham own goal as the initial shot by Bingham hit the post and then deflected into the net off Yoder.

Yoder finished the game with six saves, while sophomore Kiko Anzoategui (Peabody, Mass.) made one save in relief.  For the Engineers, who outshot the Rams 20-11 in the game, Samuel Cannon (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Jake Amereno (Commack, N.Y.) combined for the shutout with Cannon making four saves and Amereno one.

The Rams return to action on Saturday with a non-conference match against WPI slated to begin in Framingham at 10 a.m., while the Engineers travel to Wentworth on Saturday at noon.
