Men’s Soccer and Clark Play to 0-0 Double Overtime Draw

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University men's soccer team battled Clark University to a 0-0 double overtime draw this afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Maple Street Field.  With the tie, both teams are now an identical 5-5-2 on the season.

The Rams outshot the Cougars 27-10 in the game, but Clark University goalkeeper Ryan King (Brimfield, Mass.) was outstanding in net making 12 saves.  Framingham State net minder Sam Yoder (Southbridge, Mass.) was equally impressive making seven stops.

Framingham State had several opportunities to score late in the first half including on a direct kick from sophomore Ronaldo Vieira (Framingham, Mass.) with 1:36 left.  Vieira launched the kick on net from 25 yards out and it was bending towards the top corner, but King came diving across the net making the save sending the game into the half scoreless.

Just three minutes into the second half, the Rams had another opportunity to strike first, but Romulo Carvalho's (Milford, Mass.) bid from inside the box sailed just over the cross bar.

The Rams had several chances to score the decisive goal in the closing minutes of regulation. With under a minute left to play, Cory Cardeiro (Westport, Mass.) dribbled down the sideline and came free in front of the net.  Cardeiro's shot was punched away by King and the rebound went right to FSU forward Jepherson Cardoso (Framingham, Mass.) whose shot sailed over the crossbar.

In the first overtime, the Rams had several opportunities to score early, but King came up with the big saves.  Late in the first overtime period, Cardoso had a chance to redirect a cross into the open net, but his shot rolled just wide of the post.

In the second overtime, Clark had their best opportunity to break the deadlock with just over two minutes remaining.  Freshman Maxwell Lopez (Oakdale, NY) took a pass in the box alone and fired a shot in the bottom corner and Yoder made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.  The Rams had one last chance to score with a minute remaining as junior Will Menter (Haverhill, Mass.) took a direct kick from 30 yards out on the right sideline, but King once again came up with the save to preserve the draw.

The Rams return to action on Saturday as they host Bridgewater State University at 1 p.m., while the Cougars host Regis College on Saturday also at 1 p.m.
