Men's Soccer Uses Strong Second Half to Defeat Worcester State, 2-0

Worcester, Mass. - A pair of second-half goals by senior Peter Maranto (Haverhill, Mass.) and sophomore Romulo Carvalho (Milford, Mass.) gave the Framingham State University men's soccer team all they needed to defeat the host Worcester State Lancers, 2-0, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's soccer action this morning at Coughlin Field.

Both teams now sport identical 2-4-1 records. The Rams remain unbeaten at 2-0 in MASCAC play while the Lancers slip to 0-1-1 overall in the conference.

The first goal came in the 55th minute, when Carvalho received a pass from classmate Ronaldo Vieira (Framingham, Mass.) in front of the open net. Then two minutes later, Maranto tallied an insurance goal on an assist by junior Jepherson Cardoso (Framingham, Mass.) on a breakaway. The markers for both players were their first for the season.

The Rams had another chance to extend their lead in the 67th minute, but Worcester State senior Justin Biela (Bridgewater, Mass.) denied the header for the team save keeping the deficit at two goals.

Junior goalkeeper Sam Yoder (Southbridge, Mass.) recorded his second shutout of the season making four saves for the Rams, while senior net minder Evan Wilga (Dudley, Mass.) stopped eight.

Framingham State outshot the Lancers 24-11(11-4 on goal) – including a 16-7 advantage in a scoreless first half. They also held the upper-hand in corner kicks (3-0).

Both teams will play non-conference opponents this Wednesday. The Blue and Gold play cross-town rival Clark at 6 p.m., while the Rams travel to Rhode Island College for their 6 p.m. tilt.
