Vieira Scores Twice as Men’s Soccer Downs Worcester State 4-1

Framingham, Mass.  — Freshman Ronaldo Vieira (Framingham, Mass.) scored two goals to lead the Framingham State University men's soccer team to a 4-1 win today in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's soccer action at Maple Street Field.  With the win, the Rams improve to 7-1 on the season and remaining unbeaten in conference action at 2-0.  The loss drops the Lancers to 2-7 on the year and 0-2 in the MASCAC.

Vieira gave the Rams the lead for good in the 22nd minute as he took a cross from senior forward Jason Silva (Northbridge, Mass.) and placed a shot in the back of the net.  Two minutes later the Lancers had an opportunity to tie the game, but the goal was negated by an offsides call.

The Rams had several chances to extend their lead before the half, but sophomore Cory Ferris (Somerset, Mass.) was denied on a diving save by the Lancers goalkeeper Evan Wilga (Webster, Mass.).  Senior Scotty Faria (Fall River, Mass.) had a chance, as well, but his shot off a direct kick sailed just over the crossbar and the game headed to the half with the Rams leading 1-0.

The Rams struck for two goals early in the second half to extend their lead to 3-0.  Faria collected a rebound in the box and knocked it home for his eighth of season at 58:13.  Five minutes later following a hand ball in the box, Silva converted a penalty kick at 63:32 for his eighth goal of the year.

Worcester State responded with a goal of their own at 66:26 as Dan Goodine (Dracut, Mass.) drew Framingham State goalkeeper Greg Halle (Beverly, Mass.) off the line and lobbed a shot into the top corner of the net.

Vieira finished the scoring with an unassisted goal at 89:14 to reach the final margin of 4-1.

Halle made five saves in the game and picked up his seventh victory of the season which gives him 29 victories in his career, one shy of the Framingham State career record.  Wilga finished the game with seven saves for the Lancers.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday as they host Rhode Island College at 4 p.m., while the Lancers host Clark also on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
