Men’s Soccer Extends Win Streak to Four with 2-0 Win Over WPI
Framingham, Mass. — Senior Joel Kayima (Malden, Mass.) scored the game winner in the 75th minute of a scoreless game to lift the Framingham State University men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over WPI in a non-conference match this morning at Maple Street Field. The win is the third straight shutout win for the Rams, who are now 4-0 on the season. The loss drops WPI to 3-2 on the year.
In the first half the two teams had very few quality scoring chances as the Rams took only four shots and the Engineers could only muster three.
The Rams offense came alive in the second half as they outshot the Engineers 16-4 in the frame and finished the game with a 20-7 advantage in shots.
WPI had a chance to break into the scoring column in the 53rd minute as junior Michael Solano (Corning, NY) fired a shot on net from the right side but Framingham State goalie Greg Halle (Beverly, Mass.) made a diving save.
Following WPI's scoring chance, Framingham State had multiple opportunities to break the scoreless tie but WPI goalkeeper Kirk Dragsbaek (Sherborn, Mass.) kept turning shots away.
With just over 13 minutes remaining in the game, senior Scott Faria (Fall River, Mass.) launched a corner kick into the box that bounced around. Sean Austin (Winchester, Mass.) finally deflected the ball to Kayima who knocked home the game winner.
The Rams added an insurance goal less than three minutes later as Jason Silva (Northbridge, Mass.) sent the ball ahead to Peter Maranto (Haverhill, Mass.), who placed a shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Halle finished the game with three saves for the Rams and was the recipient of the 2010 Peter J. Heffernan Jr. Award, which is given annually in memory of former FSU men's soccer player Peter Heffernan Jr. Dragsbaek picked up the loss and made seven saves in the game.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday as they host Roger Williams at 4 p.m., while the Engineers entertain Brandeis on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
