Men’s Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision at WPI

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. - NEWMAC leading scorer Jason Hopkins (Mendon, MA) scored off a feed by Matthew Wzorek (Southwick, MA) in the 60th minute to propel host WPI to a 2-1 victory over Framingham State in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday.  With the win, the Engineers see their record rise to 4-1, while the Rams dip to 1-3.

Hopkins took a long cross from Wzorek and tucked the ball into the near corner at 59:54 to give the Crimson and Gray a lead they would not relinquish.  The goal was the freshman's sixth of the season in just five contests.  Framingham State nearly tied the game with just over two minutes remaining but WPI's Paul Moan (Watertown, MA) made a diving save to thwart the Rams final serious scoring threat

WPI broke through first when they tallied an own goal at 30:04.  Framingham State evened the match just over nine minutes later when Chris Watkins (Heath, MA) headed a beautifully placed direct kick from the near corner by Scott Faria (Fall River, MA) into the net for his second marker of the season.

The game was tight throughout as the Engineers enjoyed a 10-9 edge in shots while visitors held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Moan was credited with five saves on the day.  Forward Mike Ford (Whitman, MA) aided the defensive effort when he cleared a ball off the line after Framingham had earned an indirect kick from just six yards out midway through the first half.  Freshman Sam Yoder (Southbridge, MA) turned away three shots for the Rams.

Both teams are on the road on Wednesday as WPI heads to Waltham for a 7 p.m. match against Brandeis while Framingham ventures to Roger Williams for a 4 p.m. contest.
