Men's Soccer Downs Fitchburg State - Captures 2008 Regular Season Title

Framingham, MA - The Framingham State College men's soccer team scored four goals in the first ten minutes of play en route to an  8-3 win over Fitchburg State in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action today at Maple Street Field.  With the win, the Rams finish unbeaten in the MASCAC this year at 6-0-1 and capture the MASCAC Men's Soccer Regular Season Championship for the second straight year and in the process tied the school record for wins in a season with 14.

The Rams (14-3-1) were led by the duo of sophomore forward Jason Silva (Milford, MA) and senior forward Johnny Goncalves (Framingham, MA).  Silva notched a hat trick on the day, including the game winner in the 10th minute, and added an assist on the Rams first goal of the day which was scored by junior Jared Curry (Westboro, MA) in the 5th minute of play.  Goncalves scored his 11th and 12th goals of the season and added an assist in the game.

Curry and Silva connected for the Rams first two scores with Silva assisting on Curry's tally in the 5th minute and Curry assisting on Silva's first tally of the game in the 7th minute.  Junior defender Sean Austin (Winchester, MA) put the Rams up 3-0 in the 8th minute as he knocked home a corner kick from sophomore Scott Faria (Fall River, MA), who picked up three assists on the day.  Goncalves sent a cross into the box that Silva knocked home for his second of the day to give the Rams a four goal lead just 9:59 into the game. 

The Falcons (4-12-1, 0-6-1) regrouped and cut the Rams lead back to three in the 11th minute as senior forward David Tyler (Hubbardston, MA) intercepted a free kick in the box that was played short by the Rams and knocked it home into the empty net for his 5th goal of the season.

The Rams would add two more goals before the half as Goncalves scored in the 18th minute and Silva finished off the hat trick in the 25th minute to take a 6-2 lead at the break. 

Goncalves and sophomore Joel Kayima (Malden, MA) would add goals in the second half off assists from Faria and Falcon senior Jude Connelly (Harvard, MA) added two goals for the Falcons in the 23rd and 84th minutes to reach the final score of 8-3.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday as they host the 4th seed in the opening round of the MASCAC Men's Soccer Tournament.
