Men's Soccer Edges UMass Boston 4-3 in Double Overtime

Framingham, MA - Senior midfielder Mike Jones (Norwood, MA) scored just thirty-seven seconds into the second overtime to lift the Framingham State College men's soccer team to a thrilling 4-3 win over UMass Boston today at Maple Street Field.  With the win the Rams improve to 10-2-1 on the season, while the Beacons fall to 4-9.

The Rams took a commanding 2-0 lead as sophomore midfielder Jason Silva (Milford, MA) scored two goals less than a minute apart.  Jones took a thru ball from midfielder Scott Faria (Fall River, MA) and crossed it to Silva who knocked it home at 17:30 to put the Rams up 1-0.  Silva then dribbled thru the Beacon defense and beat the goalkeeper with a well placed shot at 18:24 to extend the lead to 2-0.

UMass Boston would score three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead late in the second half.  Senior Henry Marin (Haverhill, MA) converted a penalty kick in the 30th minute for the first goal.  Senior midfielder Romeo Zeqo (Medford, MA) launched a direct kick into the back of the net in the 64th minute and sophomore Alex Cavallero (Lenox, MA) knocked home a rebound in the 75th minute.

Jones and Silva would once again connect in the 89th minute of play to knot the game at 3-3.  Jones corralled a corner kick and crossed the ball into the box to Silva who scored his 3rd goal of the day and his team high 8th of the season.

After a scoreless first overtime, the Rams wasted no time in the second as Jones scored the game winner off a cross from senior midfielder Karol Tegha (Lynn, MA) less than a minute in. 

Jair Henrique Cintra (Worcester, MA) picked up the win in net for the Rams as he made eight saves, while his Beacon counterpart Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, MA) made eight saves in a losing effort.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as the Rams travel to MCLA at 1 p.m., while the Beacons host Western Connecticut at 1 p.m.
