Strong Second Period Propels Salem State Past Ice Hockey 6-3

Salem, Mass. The Framingham State University ice hockey team led after the first period but four second period goals by Salem State propelled the Vikings past the Rams 6-3 this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Rockett Arena. 

THE BASICS: 

- Score: Salem State 6, Framingham State 3 

- Records: Framingham State (2-15, 1-11 MASCAC), Salem State (7-10, 5-8 MASCAC) 

- Location: Salem, Mass. Rockett Arena 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • A turnover by the Vikings led to a goal by Jacob Garman just under two minutes into the game. Garman wristed a shot just past the Salem State net minder for the unassisted tally and the 1-0 lead which held for the remainder of the first period. 

  • The two teams combined for six goals in the second, which saw Salem State garner a one-goal lead at the end of the period. Peyton Hughes tied the game for Salem State, knocking in a rebound at 6:07 of the second period.  

  • Later, a two-on-one opportunity led to a shorthanded goal by Erik Larsson, who gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead at the 9:48 mark.  

  • The Rams' Ethan Cervonayco redirected a shot from Andrew Miller past Aaron Mercer less than a minute later, tying the game at 2-all. 

  • Joe Smith scored Salem State's third goal of the period as Matt Yiancopolus found Smith streaking along the boards with just under nine to play.  

  • Joe Smith then added his second of the period before Walker Smith added a power-play goal for Framingham State to pull the Rams to within one at 4-3 with just under four remaining in the period.  

  • The Vikings added a pair of third period goals to secure the victory.  

  • Blake Carlson made 45 saves in net for the Rams, while Mercer finished the game with 27 stops for the Vikings.
