Owls Hold Off Ice Hockey 4-2 in MASCAC Action

Framingham, Mass. The visiting Westfield State men's ice hockey team defeated Framingham State by a score of 4-2 in MASCAC action Tuesday evening at Loring Arena.  

THE BASICS: 

- Score: Westfield State 4, Framingham State 2 

- Records:Framingham State (1-13, 0-9 MASCAC), Westfield State (8-7-2, 3-5-2 MASCAC) 

- Location: Loring Arena - Framingham, Mass. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • The Owls opened up scoring in the second minute of play when Gianluca Marini finished off a setup from Jake Ratcliffe for the early lead.  

  • The Rams countered a little over halfway through the first when Matthew Paiotti snuck in a shot past Valtteri Valtonen to knot the game at one.  

  • After a flurry of powerplays throughout the second period Westfield broke the tie when Mathieu Jones snuck the puck by Trevor Stenberg after a scramble in front of the net.  

  • The Owls scored an insurance goal early in the third when Justin Collins tallied on the power-play off a pass from Joseph Carbone.  

  • The Rams answered with just under five minutes to play when Patrick Coglan found the back of the net on a 5-on-3 advantage 

  • The Owls were called for another penalty with just over two minutes to play but the Rams committed an infraction early in the power play to spoil the Rams powerplay opportunity. The Rams pulled their goalie in the final seconds and Jones scored his second of the game to reach the final margin.  

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  •  The Owls held a slim edge in shots on the evening with a 43-to-39 mark.  

  • The visitors were 2-for-7 on the powerplay while the Rams were 1-for-7.  

  • Valtonen made 37 stops in the win for Westfield while Stenberg turned away 39 Owl attempts in the loss. 

UP NEXT: 

The Owls will travel to Plymouth State on Thursday night for a match-up with the Panthers. The Rams are back in action on the same night when they travel to UMass Dartmouth for a MASCAC tilt at 6:30 PM.
