Late Surge Send Westfield Past Ice Hockey

Framingham, Mass.- The Westfield State men's ice hockey team scored two goals in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and send the Owls past Framingham State in MASCAC action Thursday evening at Loring Arena. With the win the Owls improve to 8-11-1 and 6-8 in the MASCAC. The Rams are now 3-16-2 and 2-12 in league play.

The Owls skated to a 2-0 first period lead when Jeremy Young found the back of the net nine minutes into the first stanza with assists from F.X. Girard and Nik Passero. A few moments later Girard scored one of his own with helpers from Daniel Backstrom and Robert Neuwirth.

The Rams answered with the lone second period goal when Jake McKinnon scored on the power play off a pass from Tyler Colacchio.

The home squad tied the game early in the 3rd when Ryan Paul beat Westfield goalie Kameron Limburg with help from Brandon Hamner just over five minutes into the frame.

The Owls answered just over a minute later when Neuwirth gave the Owls the lead with an assist from David Chavis. Westfield added an insurance goal with just over ten minutes to play when Aaron Clancy sent one home with helpers from Jeremy Young and Passero.

Limburg made 21 saves in the win for Westfield State while Greg Harney turned away 38 shots in the setback for the Rams.

The Owls were 1-for-4 on the man advantage and the Rams were able to convert on their one opportunity.

The Rams return to the ice on Saturday, February 10th when they travel to Fitchburg State. The Owls will travel to UMass Dartmouth on the same day.
