Ice Hockey Blanked at Fitchburg State

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University ice hockey team defeated the Rams of Framingham State University, 4-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Wallace Civic Center.

With the win Fitchburg State is now 3-2-1, 1-1-1 MASCAC.  The Rams slip to Framingham State 2-3-2 and 1-2-0 in league play. 

Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 13:01 mark of the first period as sophomore forward Christopher Vicario (Cranston, R.I.) gathered a feed from junior Ricky Kramer (Barnstead, N.H) and senior James Gordon (Hingham, Mass.) and fired a shot into the back of the net for his fourth tally on the year for the 1-0 margin. 

In the second frame, the Green and Gold doubled their advantage (2-0) with roughly eight and half minutes left in the period when Gordon deposited the puck inside the left side of the net for his first goal of the season off assists from Vicario and Kramer. 

The Falcons extended their lead with two quick goals in the final period of play as sophomore forward Tyler Warila (Shirley, Mass.) struck for his first marker on the year at the 4:38 mark before junior Michael Fretz (Seattle, Wash.) connected on his first goal of the season one minute later, resulting in the 4-0 final.

The Falcons held a narrow 39-35 margin in shots. Fitchburg State finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while Framingham State went 0-for-2 with the man advantage. 

Freshman goaltender Brian McGrath (Worcester, Mass.) stopped all 35 shots he faced en-route to his first collegiate shutout for the Falcons. 

Framingham State sophomore Greg Harney (East Haven, Conn.) finished with 35 saves in the setback.

Falcons will host the Vikings of Salem State University on Saturday for a contest starting at 4 p.m. Rams will hosts the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth on the same date for a 7:40 p.m. start time.
